🏆Diego Misseroni wins the “2025 SES Huajian Gao Young Investigator Medal” from the Society of Engineering Science. The award was given “for his contributions to the fundamental understanding of the mechanical behavior of architected metamaterials and origami structures by innovative experimental realizations leading to new insights and theoretical findings.” Misseroni is the first researcher not affiliated with a U.S. institution to receive the award. 🏠We’re excited to spotlight 𝐂𝐔𝐒𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐌𝐄, an emergency modular housing solution created to offer immediate shelter in the wake of natural disasters like earthquakes and floods, as well as to support frugal, sustainable living. Conceived through the doctoral research of Federico Fiume at the DICAM department, in the Building Design Laboratory, CUSTHOME was developed in collaboration with Brancher Legnami, a company based in Belluno. Last weekend, our researchers from the DICAM Hydraulic Laboratory participated in the #CivilProtectionWeek in Trento, bringing two interactive educational models that illustrate the functioning of a check dam and the morphodynamic processes of a River 🌊 The models, particularly the Emriver morphodynamic model, attracted the attention of the public. Children were particularly active, stepping into the role of an environmental engineers by experimenting with water, sediment and defence structures. The experts from the Servizio Bacini Montani of the Autonomous Province of Trento also had a great time. 👷♂️ A big thank you to everyone who joined us. 🏆 We are pleased to announce that Francesca Pisani has been awarded the 𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐚 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐢 𝐌𝐒𝐜 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐞 for the best Master's theses on topics related to the optimal management of water resources and the protection of land against hydrogeological hazards. The prize, awarded by ROMAGNA ACQUE - SOCIETA DELLE FONTI S.P.A. and Associazione Idrotecnica Italiana, was assigned during a ceremony held on 4 October. Francesca, along with two other recent graduates from different universities, was awarded for her thesis entitled: "Monitoring and Forecasting of Gravity Currents Induced by the Adige-Garda Tunnel Openings in Lake Garda Towards an Operational Management Tool". Supervisor: Sebastiano Piccolroaz (UniTrento DICAM); Co-supervisors: Marina Amadori (CNR-IREA) and Henk Dijkstra (Universiteit Utrecht). Her work combined field #measurements and 3D numerical #modelling to achieve a better understanding of the #turbidity currents generated in Lake Garda during maintenance and emergency openings of the Adige-Garda tunnel, with the ultimate aim of developing a modelling framework to support the management of this important civil protection infrastructure. 🌍💧 We extend our warmest congratulations to Francesca on this outstanding achievement!
