𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗢𝗹𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲 🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊 On 2 April 2024, CAS rendered a significant decision on an appeal filed by the International Boxing Federation ("IBA") against the decision rendered by the International Olympic Committee (“IOC”) on 22 June 2023 to withdraw the IOC’s recognition of the IBA as the International Federation for the sport of boxing. Reportedly, since its foundation in 1894, this is the first time the IOC bans an international governing body from running a sport. The withdrawal of IBA's recognition stemmed from a windy process, which was fuelled from various media corruption allegations against the IBA following the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Initially, on 6 December 2017 the IOC suspended its financial contributions to the IBA. In November 2018, the IOC initiated a formal inquiry pursuant to Rule 59 of the Olympic Charter into the IBA's affairs and, over the years, appointed specific Committees aimed at progressively monitoring the IBA's governance, sporting integrity and financial management and establishing key improvements to be reached. On 26 June 2019, the IOC decided, amongst other things, to suspend its recognition of the IBA. Although the IBA had made a number of improvements in the above-mentioned areas, the required improvements were deemed not to be met in full and serious concerns central to sport governance and administration remained. Consequently, the IBA's recognition was finally withdrawn on 22 June 2023 under the Olympic Charter Rule 3.7. IBA appealed such decision to CAS. After a thorough analysis, CAS rejected the IBA's appeal considering inter alia that: "The IBA does not enjoy a right to be recognised; [omissis] The IBA does enjoy personality rights by dint of its IOC recognition and enjoys economic and sporting benefits as a result, but those rights are contingent upon continued recognition which the IOC has the sound discretion to determine". The boxing qualifying events and competitions at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028 will not be run under the authority of the IBA.
