🧬🏺✨ DNA meets Mythology - Molecular Cell cover of mine illustrating Cohesin as the two-faced god Janus: Check out the idea behind it 👇 Cohesin is a highly conserved protein complex binding Chromosomes which is famous for doing two things: A) Keeping the sister chromatids together and B) driving DNA loop extrusion. But are these two aspects of Cohesin Biology based on the same function or are there independent mechanisms behind them? Kota Nagasaka from Jan-Michael Peters lab at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) figured it out! They generated a Cohesin mutant that can still mediate loop extrusion, but is deficient in sister chromatid cohesion. So this cover artwork depicts Cohesin as Janus, the two-faced ancient roman god of duality and passages, symbolizing the dichotomy of Cohesin's two functions. Curious about details? Orexin receptors are proteins located on the surface of nerve cells in the brain and other tissues of the body that respond to orexin, also known as hypocretin. Orexin is a neuropeptide that plays a crucial role in regulating sleep, wakefulness, and feeding. There are two main types of orexin receptors, known as OX1 and OX2, which are members of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family. In this study, the homology structure of OXR1 was obtained using Modeller 10.4, based on the PDB model 6TO7. The CHARMM-GUI server was used to embed the receptor in a POPC bilayer membrane. The orexin 1 peptide was obtained from the PDB model 1CQ0.
