great recording but its the lyrics inspiring a confused state of who is the butterfly unfurling its tongue and who might be the welcoming blossom, reserved honesty, scared confidence, smoldering cool, sunglasses indoors. a rapturous, languorous voice that commands you believe.

Across the ten tracks on Summer of Love, Jess Ribeiro traverses isolation, loss, tiny snatches of love, expectation versus reality, once-in-a-century pandemics and healing. It was written and recorded during a particularly unstable time, with Ribeiro living in nine different houses across a two year period, including six months in a church outside of the city - “that instability affected my mental health,” she says. It also created the spark for her fourth album, on which Ribeiro transfixes audiences as she digs deep into the present, past, and wanted future.
The first demos for Summer of Love were sketched out at a solar-powered shack by Ribeiro with her friend and musical collaborator Dave Mudie (Courtney Barnett, Super American Eagle), an experience that wasn’t without excitement: “We used all the solar power trying to record demos. It ended with us around a fire without electricity for the night, terrified that the feral boars were going to get us.” From there, she recorded the album with Nick Huggins on Wadawurrung Country in Point Lonsdale with special guests Jim White (Dirty Three, Xylouris White) on drums, Darcy McNulty on saxophone, folk-diviner Leah Senior on keys, James Seymour on bass, Davie Mudie taking percussion duties, Carrie Webster on violin and viola, and Huggins himself chipping in on bass, tape and drum loops, synth, guitars and piano. The way in which the album came together with her collaborators - separately, but towards the same north star - is where the beauty in the work is experienced. “It was improvised and experimental, musicians could only come visit one at a time due to the restrictions, half of the musicians never even came to the studio.”
Jess Ribeiro is a shape-shifting musical enigma - the near-untouchable quality of her recorded output is astonishingly consistent. Across three critically-acclaimed albums - LOVE HATE (2019), Kill It Yourself (2015), My Little River (2012) - Ribeiro crossed genre boundaries to create bodies of work that cemented her as one of so-called-Australia’s most unique voices in songwriting and storytelling. Across these albums and 2023’s single ‘Summer of Love’, she seen widespread support from NPR, The Guardian, The Saturday Paper, The Monthly, Sydney Morning Herald, Rolling Stone, triple j, Feature Album on Double J, ABC RN (+Album of the Year) and Triple R among others, with wins and nominations from the Australian Music Prize, Music Victoria Awards, AIR Awards and the Environmental Music Prize (for her 2022 single ‘In Love With This Place’).
Alongside her own musical output, Jess Ribeiro has lent her voice to other musicians - including backing vocals for Nick Cave’s Push The Sky Away tour, Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile’s collaborative album Whole Lotta Sea Lice and Mick Harvey’s tetralogy of albums presenting the songs of Serge Gainsbourg. She has toured extensively, including a national tour with Gareth Liddiard last December, shows with Aldous Harding and Angel Olsen, festival appearances at Meredith Music Festival, Dark Mofo, Woodford Folk Festival, Perth Festival, and a series of curated art gallery performances at NGV and Mona, among others.
Jess Ribeiro is a shape-shifting musical enigma. The near-untouchable quality of her recorded output is astonishingly
consistent and the wait for new music is always worthwhile.
Ribeiro’s songs are cinematic in scope: it’s music that travels, across deserts like a Western, through city streets like Film Noir....more
Woozy, rollicking indie rock that's thick and humid, searching vocals set against pealing guitars. Also available on cassette. Bandcamp New & Notable Aug 22, 2016
