🌍 25 Years of Uniting Business for a Better World This year, we mark a pivotal milestone—the 25th anniversary of the UN Global Compact. Launched in 2000 by then-Secretary-General Kofi Annan, what began as a bold vision to align business with universal principles has grown into the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, mobilizing 20,000+ companies across 160+ countries. Join us in celebrating 25 years of impact as we reflect on key moments, spotlight business leadership and look ahead to the next era of corporate sustainability. Our journey is far from over. The legacy of hope, innovation and action from the UN Global Compact continues to drive change worldwide. Now is the time to build on this foundation—not only to advance the #GlobalGoals but to create a world where business, people and the planet thrive in harmony. The road ahead is challenging, but together, we can rise to meet it. #UNGlobalCompact #UnitingBusiness #Sustainability #SDGs #25Years

  • Earlier this week, we had the honour of meeting with Ms. Joyce Msuya, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator. We exchanged ideas to explore possibilities of collaboration between United Nations OCHA and Global Compact Network Japan, in view of the importance of the private sector's support for #humanitarian situations around the world. We would like to also thank Ms. Akiko Yoshida, Head of Humanitarian Advisory Team Japan, and Mr. Justin Dittmeier, Humanitarian Affairs Officer / Special Assistant to the ASG/DERC, for arranging this important meeting and being part of the delegation!

Assistant Secretary-General; CEO & Executive Director of the UN Global Compact

Yesterday, during the 13th UN Forum on Business and Human Rights, I began with a reflection on the visionary leadership that has set high ambitions for business and human rights. Twenty-five years later, over 20,000 companies have committed to the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact, reflecting a transformative shift in how businesses perceive their role in society. In the past two years, over 1,400 companies across nearly 60 countries have participated in our 6-month Business and Human Rights Accelerator, engaging in 33 hours of in-depth learning on human rights due diligence. The ‘smart mix’ approach—a combination of voluntary corporate action and mandatory regulations—provides a clear path forward. The UN Guiding Principles (UNGPs) offer a robust framework that emphasizes shared responsibility between Governments and businesses. Although many challenges persist, we must recognize that challenges present opportunities and welcome the drivers for change. Human rights should be seen not only as a moral imperative but as a strategy to enhance performance while offering human-centered solutions to pressing social challenges. It is time to prioritize bold and accountable leadership across every sector. Let us look beyond the obstacles and seize this moment for transformative action. 📽️ : UN Human Rights Council

  • On December 10, World Human Rights Day, we concluded the program for the newly launched Japan Track of the "Business and Human Rights Accelerator 2024" with a closing session. Held in a hybrid format in a conference room kindly provided by SEGA SAMMY HOLDINGS INC., this session included group discussions among participants on the insights gained through the accelerator program and initiatives they could implement to apply these learnings within their own companies. The session concluded with a summary lecture delivered by GCNJ Board Member, 菅原 絵美.

The private sector has a pivotal role in fighting corruption, and we see three key areas of transformation: 1. Setting the global business integrity agenda 2. Driving Collective Action against corruption worldwide 3. Leading the evolution from compliance to integrity and beyond Together, we must mobilize the private sector to eliminate corruption and advance integrity globally.
