Yesterday the "Australia-Japan Innovation Alliance Forum: Smart Society Towards 2030" took place in Nagoya at Innovators Garage, marking the third time the event has been held alongside the annual Australia Japan Business Co-operation Committee (AJBCC) conference. Kudos to the committee for pulling together such a meaningful and valuable event. The event celebrated the hard work of our AJBCC Innovation, Technology & Startups Sub-Committee, as well as the broader "bilateral innovation corridor" between Australia and Japan. It provided a moment to reflect on the current landscape, recent developments, and the opportunities or challenges that have arisen over the past 12 months. For me personally, it was a fantastic chance to connect with others facing similar challenges, and to spend time with key partners like Dax Kukulj from UNSW Innovation Community and Don Wright from Launch Pad - Western Sydney University who traveled to Japan for the event. While many of the themes and topics remained consistent, one clear takeaway was the growing number of success stories and examples of collaboration between startups, universities, governments, and corporations in Australia and Japan. For those working on innovation projects between the two countries, this growth has shifted the focus from "we can do this, let’s give it a try" to "we know this works, now let's invest more and scale it up." This message resonated with our Innovation Dojo Australia and Innovation Dojo Japan teams, as we’ve more than doubled our headcount since the last event, and our business model continues to evolve. It was also great to see our team playing key roles in the bilateral relationship, with Naoya Yoshizumi and Kanako Murase voluntarily supporting operations and networking on the day, and Kaoru Nishinakagawa (with her Australia Japan Innovation Fund hat on), Marisa W. (representing UNSW's business development work in Japan) and I all participating in panel discussions. The photos below are from the panel discussion I moderated on "Emerging Models in Cross-Border Innovation Collaboration," where the audience heard from: - Takahiro (Taka) Iino from MUFG, sharing insights into the current innovation activities at Japan’s largest financial institution, - Marisa W. highlighting the partnership between Innovation Dojo and UNSW, and offering her perspective as the only Japan-based Business Development Manager for an Australian university, - Jun Hosoya, General Partner at InterValley Ventures who entertained and enlightened the audience with candid insights about the good, the bad, and the ugly of cross-border innovation in 2024, - Andrew McLean, Managing Partner from Tin Alley Ventures, who provided a glimpse into future possibilities for health and life sciences innovation in Australia and Japan. We are beyond simply saying "there has never been a better time for Japan-Australia innovation"—we have already proven that. Now it’s time to scale this up.
