The Sahm Rule, is a recession early warning indicator that compares the short term employment trend to the lowest level of the prior twelve months. As an indicator it has been a reliable predictor of recent US recessions. Following recent US employment data, the threshold was breached with great interest from market commentators and suggestions that the US may be in the early stages of a recession. We remain cautious - recent years have seen unprecedented low unemployment numbers and we ask if it is too early to apply the rule given that US unemployment is still below the estimated 4% full employment level. #MUFG #markets #fixedincome #interestrates #economics

・Behind the rise in investor activism in Japan is the change in corporate attitudes in favor of shareholder interests, which has increased the likelihood of activist proposals being accepted. Investor activism should increase further, given increasing support from institutional investors, prominent calls for more focused business strategies such as business portfolio revisions, and a rise in M&A activity by business corporations. ・Investment returns tend to rise over the long term when companies acquiesce to proposals made by activists. Activism can be viewed as a catalyst for promoting corporate management reform, and investors in the Japanese equity markets will need to carefully scrutinize the content of activist demands and the intentions behind managements’ responses. #MUFG #Japan #Equities #Markets

In our June Global Fixed Income update; Head of Investment, Gary Hutchings discusses the growth outlook and balancing the impact of employment and inflation. With higher government deficits, we discuss why we see real rates in a range of 1.5-2.0% and why this makes bond markets relatively attractive at current levels. In a big year for elections, following recent French and UK polls and US Elections on the horizon, we remain acutely aware of political risk and the fact that navigation of these risks is challenging. The economic outlook remains unchanged and we expect the US 10 Year to move in a range of around 3.8-4.7%, with duration adjusted accordingly. Currency country allocations remain important; we do not have a very clear view on the USD/EUR and we position around correlated currencies. We also discuss our credit and spread positioning. #MUFG #markets #fixedincome #interestrates #economics

In this month’s Global Fixed Income Update we discuss the variable nature of growth across economies and the influence of mild, yet persistent monetary policy pressure. With inflation still higher than central banks would like and a lack of fiscal tightening, monetary policy will remain the key lever in driving inflation to target. In terms of positions; in rates we discuss our current longer dated positioning, in currencies, the lack of EUR/USD trend and subsequent position in bloc currencies and Yuan. Finally, in spread we are long financials vs industrials. #MUFG #markets #fixedincome #interestrates #economics
