We are proud to have celebrated Black History Month throughout October. Our EMEA Community Affairs team joined forces with SEO London, our EMEA Charity Partner, to hold an Insights Day at our London office for Black Heritage students, helping to inspire the next generation of young Black professionals in the financial services industry. Our EMBRACE Inclusion Network welcomed Lorraine Wright-Boateng MBE for an insightful lunch and learn session on the topic of reclaiming narratives, which was the theme for this year’s Black History Month. The discussion focused on challenging stereotypes, sharing stories of resilience, success, and empowerment. In collaboration with Mastercard we were also delighted to welcome Professor David Luke from The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) for an engaging panel discussion. The panellists shared their lived experiences and what reclaiming narratives means to them. To continue the celebrations beyond October, we will also be holding a wine tasting event with Arlene King, one of Britain’s first Black female sommeliers, showcasing a number of Black wine producers. November 8 is Pink Friday. Colleagues in our offices across Asia, including Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and India showed their support for the LGBTQ+ community again this year by wearing pink. Pink Friday is an initiative launched by Goldman Sachs in Hong Kong in 2014 to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues and promote inclusivity in the workplace. Nomura supports this initiative and holds a wide range of events at our offices every year. Nomura is committed to a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace environment where every employee can maximize their potential.

It’s been a busy past week with European Q3 GDP data and an expansionary UK budget, which led to a rise in European and UK bond yields. For this year’s Pink October, our Women in Nomura network organized various educational and charity events to raise awareness about breast health. Colleagues across our offices in Asia also proudly wore pink to show their support and solidarity for breast cancer awareness.

[Nomura Employee Interview] Episode 5: Developing Nomura's Middle East business from Dubai Nomura is expanding business in the Middle East from Dubai, a city which has seen particularly strong economic growth. We spoke with the Senior Executive Officer of DIFC Branch, Nomura International plc, and the Head of International Wealth Management (Nomura Singapore Limited) about Nomura's business in Dubai. Q: Tell us about Dubai A: Dubai is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Nearly 90% of Dubai's population of approximately 3.5 million are expatriates, more than half of whom are from India. In addition to tax benefits such as no income tax, inheritance tax, or property tax, the safety level, good education, and relaxed visa requirements have led to an influx of people from all over the world. The Dubai government has recently been proactive in promoting digital technology and crypto assets. This has created an environment suitable for crypto assets and blockchain businesses, accelerating the entry of crypto asset-related companies into Dubai and an inflow of high-net-worth individuals who have built wealth through crypto businesses. Q: What type of business does Nomura’s Dubai office do? A: Nomura is currently building four businesses (see image). As part of our expansion efforts, we are prioritizing the acquisition of clients in each of those businesses, and collaborating across them to provide services and, where appropriate, referring clients to one another. With the establishment of Laser Digital (Nomura’s digital asset subsidiary) in 2022 and International Wealth Management (IWM) branch in Dubai in 2023, we are now able to provide our clients with a wide range of investment services, from traditional assets to crypto assets. This is a unique strength that sets Nomura apart from most other financial institutions in Dubai. Q: Why did Nomura establish a branch of IWM in Dubai? A: We wanted to be a part of the exciting growth opportunity to offer our IWM and one-bank solutions to clients in Dubai and the Middle East region. We are also actively seeking opportunities to leverage Nomura’s broader capabilities in our Japan home market to provide IWM clients with preferential access to Japan markets and products. Q: What is your outlook going forward? A: The Middle East, Africa, South Asia (MEASA) region is forecast to be one of the fastest growing wealth markets globally. We seek to grow Nomura's IWM business to be among the Top 20 private banks in Asia. More than ever, clients in the Middle East are turning their attention to Japan as an investment destination, and we feel strongly that their expectations from Nomura are rising.
