The AIRsight Infrared/Raman Microscope is a unique microscope that combines both infrared and Raman spectroscopy into a single instrument, offering complementary molecular information. In this application, we conducted measurements of iron oxide and oxyhydroxide, the main causes of rust. It was found that the spectra of inorganic compounds, which are difficult to detect with infrared measurements, can be obtained through Raman measurements. Since Raman measurements can confirm the functional groups of metal oxides, it is possible to qualitatively identify the types of rust. Additionally, in fluorescent X-ray measurements, peaks at different energy positions for each element can be observed, allowing for a multifaceted evaluation of the metals.
