A National Construction Authority [2019] report showed that substandard construction materials contribute to the third-highest percentage of collapsed buildings at 28 percent. It is everyone's responsibility to change this including cement players, regulators, contractors, retailers, and customers. More than 150 tons of wheat bran that had been deemed unfit for human consumption have been destroyed by Bamburi Cement PLC's Geocycle in collaboration with the National Environmental Management Authority [NEMA], Kenya Revenue Authority [KRA], Kenya Ports Authority [KPA], Kenya Bureau of Standards [KEBS], and Kenya Police. At our Mombasa Plant kilns, the condemned wheat bran was expertly burned using co-processing technology. It will be transformed into energy [by combining it with other fuels]. This will reduce carbon emissions and the company's use of fossil fuels as part of our circular economy. It follows the destruction of the infamous 73 tons of contaminated cereals from Mukumu Girls destroyed [at the Mombasa Plant] last year, which the government approved as the quickest and safest method. #bamburicement

We were in the coastal city of Mombasa for this year’s International Construction Research Conference and Exhibition (ICoRCE). ICoRCE is organized by the National Construction Authority (NCA) and plays an important role in the growth and development of research in the construction industry. In his presentation on Sustainability in Construction – a Bamburi Cement perspective, our Commercial Director Martin J Kariuki articulated our sustainability ambitions – which include our innovative green cement portfolio, their durability and sustainability impact on large infrastructure projects. Significantly, he highlighted the potential impacts of substandard cements in the market, that include; ~Vertically integrated quality degradation – repercussions on construction concrete ~Collapse of building and structures ~Unfair trade competition Our proposal on substandard products mitigation is a collaborative approach of public and private sector construction stakeholders to restore sanity in the market. #BamburiCement
