Our CEO, Kenfield Griffith, recently joined Chimgozirim Nwokoma on Techpoint Africa’s  Equity Merchant Podcast to discuss his journey from completing his PhD to building tappi. In this conversation, he also dives into the challenges of creating solutions for MSMEs across Africa, raising capital, and how tappi is leveraging partnerships to drive growth. Reflecting on his motivation, Kenfield shares: “The lack of data to make informed decisions about people’s quality of life across the continent felt like a much bigger agenda for me to pursue, rather than just writing PhD research papers that would sit on a shelf.” This conversation is packed with inspiring insights and actionable tips for anyone interested in entrepreneurship and driving change across the continent. Out of the 1,556 applicants representing 75 countries, Tappi was selected amongst the 47 semifinalists in the Ecobank Fintech Challenge 2024. Though our journey has ended there, we are excited about the new relationship created with one of the leading Pan-African banks and we will keep nurturing outside of this competition. We are grateful to the Ecobank Kenya Limited team for their support during this journey and congratulations to BuuPass - Bus, Train & Flight bookings and Melanin Kapital who will be representing Kenya in the final leg of the challenge.

We partnered with Pork-and-Go, a restaurant that offers a wide range of meats barbecued with different flavors in Nairobi, Kenya.  Pork-and-Go was struggling to reach customers. Like many other businesses, Pork-and-Go faced several issues such as: — Limited Tech Knowledge: Building and managing a website felt overwhelming without technical expertise. — Online Payment Concerns: Security worries existed around online transactions. — Resource Constraints: Managing an online presence seemed like an extra burden on top of daily operations. Tappi partnered with Pork-and-Go and helped them build an online presence, secure their payment system, and engage with customers. This is how we did it: — Effortless Online Presence: With Tappi, the restaurant team set up a website that displays their food with inviting visuals and detailed descriptions, capturing the essence of their restaurant. — Secure Online Ordering: Pork-and-Go's customers could now order their favorite meals online, paying securely with airtime credit or mobile money through Tappi's system. This fixed the cash-on-delivery limitations — Expanded Reach: Tappi connected Pork-and-Go with local delivery services. Their food is now delivered across Nairobi, allowing them to reach more customers. — Building a Community: Tappi created social media accounts for Pork-and-Go, allowing them to interact with their customers. Customers can share pictures and write reviews, so Pork-and-Go can serve them better. From a small start to a thriving business with an online presence, Pork-and-Go's story shows the impact technology can have on African businesses. It’s our mission to digitize businesses by tailoring solutions to meet their unique needs.

There are more than 44 million small and medium businesses in Africa–but most are offline, and they miss out on opportunities to attract new customers and increase revenue. Getting online is hard for small businesses because: —running ads and paying website fees is expensive  —their teams lack technical knowledge about website metrics and maintenance  —they have little marketing support to guide their content creation But AI could be the answer. Here is how the team is leveraging AI at Tappi to help small businesses in Africa grow: — 24/7 customer support: With AI, customers get instant answers to their questions. Smart tech handles basic inquiries, freeing up SMEs to focus on their craft - their businesses.  — Content creation: Creating engaging content on a regular basis can be time consuming. AI tools can create and automate both graphics and social media captions to build visibility and get more customers. — Data insights: Tech tools can analyze trends and audience data, giving businesses insight on their customer behavior and make recommendations such as ideal opening times and products to stock. — Removing language barriers: Multilingual chat bots can offer support to customers in their native languages. For example, at Tappi we offer chat services in African languages such as Swahili, Yoruba, Zulu, and Amharic. AI offers opportunities for businesses to grow by automating tasks and providing data insights small businesses otherwise wouldn’t have access to. Tappi is excited to use AI to help small businesses thrive.
