Yesterday I spent my evening at Ikigai Nairobi, where we had a panel discussion in collaboration with Global Wellness Day ®, themed, "It's Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace." This conversation focused on mental health in corporate environments and explored practical ways organisations can support employee well-being. The discussion highlighted key approaches to fostering a mentally healthy workplace: compassionate leadership, flexible policies, and a culture that values authenticity. Nailah Mutheu reminded us that we are human beings, not human doings, emphasizing the importance of balancing productivity with human needs. "Not everyone is meant to be an entrepreneur, you have to figure out for yourself what works for you." In this regard, Elizabeth Gitari-Mitaru advocated (no pun intended 😄) for individualized approaches to workplace fulfillment. Loise Machira of Tizi Talks added, "Workplace wellness isn't just a perk, it's an investment in productivity and longevity." While the insights shared were brilliant, to make real progress, the following next steps were recommended: Policy Development - Establish a flexible mental health policy incorporating wellness days, flexible hours, and open-door access to managers. Include affordable wellness perks like gym discounts, green spaces, and partnerships with wellness programs. Training and Awareness - Equip managers with training to identify and address signs of burnout, empowering them to support team well-being. Offer workshops on financial wellness and work-life balance to help employees build resilience. Open Communication - Schedule monthly check-ins and feedback sessions for open discussions on mental health and work-related stress. Set up forums or peer support groups to foster a sense of community within the workplace. Continuous Improvement - Regularly review wellness policy impacts and gather feedback for necessary adjustments. Partner with wellness consultants to keep programs relevant and effective. Bottomline? Let's prioritise #MentalHealth in the workplace–not just for today, but for the future of our organisations and the well-being of everyone within them. Prioritizing Mental Health in the Workplace: Insights from Ikigai Brookeside’s World Mental Health Day Event. This year’s World Mental Health Day at Ikigai Brookeside brought together a powerful panel of leaders and mental health advocates, each offering insights on how organizations can and must prioritize mental health in the workplace. Speakers included Elizabeth Gitari of OGO Law, Clara Mwangola from Kuramo Capital, Loise Macharia, founder of Tizi Talks Wellness, Becky Abraham of Pathway Technologies, and Olive Ndiangui, a counseling psychologist. Nailah Mutheu moderated the session, creating a supportive and open environment for this crucial conversation. My main takeaway is that prioritizing mental health in the workplace isn’t simply a passing trend; it’s a crucial part of fostering a healthy, productive, and resilient work environment. The insights shared during the Ikigai Brookeside event emphasized that supporting mental health goes beyond offering resources but it involves cultivating a culture that truly respects and values the well-being of each individual. Let’s take these lessons forward and commit to making mental health a foundational priority in every organization. By doing so, we can create spaces where employees feel safe, supported, and empowered to bring their full, authentic selves to work.
