This morning, the much-anticipated webinar organized by KIFFWA - Kenya Innovative Finance Facility for Water and Kenya Climate Ventures (KCV) on Water Investments ; Promoting Climate Resilience and Equitable Access, moderated by Mark Masai, took place. This webinar was a precursor for the launch of the National Irrigation Sector Investment Plan -NISIP on Friday 21st March and World Water Day on Saturday 22nd March. The PS State Department of Irrigation, CPA Ephantus Kimotho graced the webinar. He outlined the government's ambitious plan of putting one million acres of land under #irrigation thus the great need of building #waterinfrastructure to promote #watersecurity. He called for action in catalyzing private sector investments through #PublicPrivatePartnerships therefore decentering over-reliance on government and donor funding. The government is also determined to unlock investment opportunities in the ASALs. The PS was joined by Mr. Daniel Odero, Director – Irrigation, Water Management, Harvesting and Storage at the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation. A diverse seasoned experts made insightful contributions as panelists in this webinar. Dr Barbara Kazimbaya Senkwe underscored the importance of #research and #innovation to tackle water challenges being experienced in the country. Enock Ole Kiminta echoed these sentiments outlining how the use of mobile phones has been a #catalyst in mobilizing farmers and #communities to engage in #conservation efforts downstream, ensuring that there is no tampering with the quality and quantity of water. Christine Atego was quick to point out how #smallholder farmers continue to experience challenges of limited financing as financial institutions categorize them as high-risk borrowers. With the dwindling of donor funding towards water-climate initiatives, Euphresia l emphasized on the need of empowering communities to be self-sustainable. She also called for the strengthening of #governance mechanisms to promote #accountability of funds used and removal of policy and regulatory bottlenecks that hinder investments. Eldah Odongo called for #inclusivity of mostly women in #decisionmaking as they bare the most brunt effect of water- related disasters. This webinar has put on a challenge to all relevant stakeholders to action on the plans documented to contain water-related disasters, catalyze investments and seek for local solutions for the betterment of our society.
