In this month's issue of Food Security Monitor, Nigeria saw a 1% improvement in the prevalence of insufficient food consumption, equivalent to 2.1 million people, indicating progress in food security. Additionally, the African Development Bank committed USD 2.5 billion to the development of priority infrastructure projects in Tanzania, including transport infrastructure, which will enhance food trade and security in the region. Today, as we celebrate #InternationalWomen’sDay, we shine a spotlight on the transformative role of women in cross-border trade—a key driver of economic growth, regional integration, and food security across Africa. Despite their immense contribution, women traders face significant barriers, including inaccessibility of land, limited access to finance, unfair pay, high trade tariffs, lack of information on market regulations, and security risks at border points. It’s time to break these barriers and unlock their full potential.
