Ted Talk | “How to Empower Farmers and Nourish the Planet Dr. AGNES KALIBATA recently delivered an inspiring TED Talk titled “How to Empower Farmers and Nourish the Planet”. In her talk, she highlighted the crucial role of Africa’s smallholder farmers, who feed millions and uplift economies despite often lacking essential resources. Dr. Kalibata emphasized the transformative potential of empowering these farmers with better tools, climate resilience strategies, and improved market access. She shared compelling success stories and practical solutions, illustrating how these measures can significantly enhance productivity and sustainability. One striking example she provided was the dramatic reduction in labor time for cassava farming through mechanization, showcasing how technology can revolutionize agricultural practices. Dr. Kalibata also discussed the importance of creating supportive policies and fostering public-private partnerships to drive these changes. Her vision for the future is one where empowered farmers not only nourish humanity but also care for the planet, ensuring food security and sustainable growth for generations to come. #RoadToAFSForum | Spotlight On Nigeria The AGRA Gender Consortium has made remarkable progress in empowering women farmers across Nigeria. Value Seeds Limited has played a crucial role, training 40,378 women farmers on GAPs and reaching 31,085 women with promoted interventions, leading to USD 4,486,887 in leveraged loans. The consortium has also trained 351 women seed outgrowers, distributed 210 metric tonnes of seeds, and 84,000 bags of fertiliser. In addition, 195 individuals have been trained in short-term agricultural skills, and 175 VBAs have been identified and trained. Five new public-private partnerships have been formed to strengthen the value chain. Palm Valley NG has further supported these efforts by training women in farming as an enterprise, establishing agro-processing centres, and providing opportunities for 15,000 women and youth. These combined efforts are driving a more resilient agricultural ecosystem in Nigeria. #AGRAImpact #AGRANigeria #AGRAatAFS

#RoadToAFSForum | Spotlight On Nigeria The AGRA Gender Consortium is actively fostering gender inclusivity within agriculture in Kaduna State, reshaping the landscape of women's participation, especially among smallholder farmers. In collaboration with partners such as Value Seeds Limited, Palm Valley NG, and Leads Nigeria, the consortium is enhancing the productivity of women farmers by equipping them with essential knowledge and resources. A significant milestone in this initiative is the opening of three processing centers for maize and rice in Kaduna State, designed to empower women in rural communities. These centers, along with efforts to increase young women's access to output markets, are set to make a substantial difference in their lives. AGRA remains committed to building the capacity of smallholder farming households and value chains to better prepare for and adapt to challenges and uncertainties in agriculture. #RoadToAFSForum2024 | Spotlight on Nigeria In Nigeria, agriculture is vital to the economy and the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers, but the sector faces challenges, especially in the quality and availability of seeds. Counterfeit seeds have severely impacted crop yields and food security. To tackle these issues, AGRA has partnered with the National Agricultural Seed Council (@NASC_NG) to improve seed quality assurance processes. This initiative focuses on increasing access to high-quality seeds by upgrading NASC's laboratory facilities and enhancing the skills of its technical staff. #AGRAImpact #AGRANigeria #AGRAatAFS
