In 2022 with Patrick Kelahan my partner at The Insurance Elephant Company we met Joel Macharia who is the founder and CEO of MotiSure. Since then we have seen how Joel and his team have developed the company at its business model / products with great success in Kenya a country with a very low insurance penetration. MotiSure is another great example of a company that has developed a great business model / products that can be very easily replicated in other countries. In this case I am not only talking about underserved markets like India or any country in Latam but also in mature markets. By supporting their business model / products with WhatsApp as there main communication tool they have been able to communicate and interact with consumers that use WhatsApp as its main communication tools in a way that could have never been possible through conventional tools like email and sms. Keep in mind that WhatsApp has over 3 billion monthly active users. This is just one of the many key features they have developed. What sets MotiSure apart is its focus on micro-payments, making insurance more accessible to everyday Kenyans. For instance, motorcycle taxi operators can opt for personal accident cover with premiums as low as $0.1 per day. This approach is especially significant in a market like Kenya, where traditional long-term insurance covers require one-off payments and are often beyond the reach of many. MotiSure's customer-centric approach tailors its offerings to the specific needs and risk profiles of its customers, using technology such as IoT and telematics. This approach was developed after extensive research and interaction with potential users, ensuring that the products truly meet the needs of their target audience. MotiSure's success story is a testament to how innovative approaches, supported by a conducive regulatory environment, can effectively bridge the gap in insurance coverage, especially for low-income earners and those in the informal sector. The Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) in Kenya has played a supportive role in creating an enabling environment for such innovative insurance models.
