Our team, represented by Elaine Wahome (Fundraising) and Mary M. (Legal), recently attended a transformative 2-day workshop hosted by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) in partnership with the Conservation Alliance Kenya (CAK) and WWF-Kenya, on August 20-21, 2024, in Nairobi. The event brought together youth, negotiators, conservation partners, and state agencies to focus on the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Key takeaways included: 🗣 Intergenerational knowledge exchange 🤝 Building synergies and policy coherence 📊 Capacity building, data, and financial mechanisms 🎯 Post-COP briefings to ensure long-term impact Elaine shared: “It was enlightening to see the gaps in collaboration and understanding across different MEAs, but equally inspiring to witness youth learning from experienced policymakers. Looking forward to the changes we can influence as we approach the COPs for CBD, UNFCCC, and CITES!” #TonyWildFoundation #VELPStories #ConservationMatters #YouthForNature #BiodiversityProtection #COP30 #ConservationLeadership #COP16 #COP29

Our Director and Founder, Anthony Ochieng recently attended FAME Week Africa in Cape Town, South Africa—a premier event celebrating Africa's creative and cultural industries. During the event, Anthony was part of a dynamic panel hosted by Nature, Environment & Wildlife Filmmakers that focused on ocean access for African storytellers. From Anthony's perspective, telling ocean stories as an African comes with unique challenges: "First, you need to learn how to swim, and even after mastering that, there’s the fear of being in the vast blue expanse. But beyond the personal barriers, training in free diving or scuba diving and the cost of equipment is a huge obstacle for many aspiring African filmmakers." However, communities like NEWF are breaking down these barriers, and through our conservation education programs, we're empowering more African youth to tell these crucial conservation stories through their perspective —from forests to oceans. All we know is that the stories that will come from Africans years from now will be revolutionary. #FAMEWeekAfrica #NEWF #VELPStories #OceanConservation #AfricanStorytellers #TonyWildFoundation #EnvironmentMatters
