#Maximizing_Production from Kazakhstan’s #Mature_Oil_Fields: Insights from BCG Expert. Kazakhstan, a major player in the global oil and gas market, is facing a critical challenge: production at its largest oil fields is plateauing. According to Dr. Marc van Grondelle, Partner and Director at Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and a member of BCG’s Global Advantage Practice, mature fields like Tengiz and Karachaganak are showing signs of decline, while Kashagan's growth remains slow. Speaking at the recent KIOGE - Kazakhstan Oil & Gas Conference & Exhibition, he emphasized that these mature fields, despite challenges, still hold substantial untapped potential. Several factors are hindering sustained high production. Mature fields often lose priority to new exploration projects, and in Kazakhstan, slow cost recovery under Production Sharing Agreements (PSAs) discourages investment. Additionally, non-operating partners tend to take a passive role, limiting effective collaboration with operators and governments. However, according to van Grondelle, these challenges are surmountable. Recently, BCG helped a client reverse premature production decline at a flagship field, achieving steady production growth within a few months through cost-effective measures. BCG’s approach, as outlined by van Grondelle, consists of four key steps: 1. Identifying financial, operational, and technical barriers to increasing production. 2. Strengthening collaboration with partners to pool resources, expertise, and personnel. 3. Defining targeted actions to unlock the field’s full potential. 4. Implementing and closely monitoring these actions to ensure sustainable production increases. Van Grondelle highlighted that by improving partnerships with international oil companies and offering more favorable PSA terms, Kazakhstan can fully realize the potential of its mature fields. This strategy has proven effective, boosting GDP by 3% in one case with modest investment.
