Last week BATYR LAB 2024 officially concluded, and I am so grateful to have contributed to such an exciting project! BATYR LAB is a residency for Central Asian musicians organised by Batyr Foundation. This year its participants had practical sessions with the head mentor Ivan Dorn and educational intensives with experts in music production, distribution, PR, and law. Back in February, Batyr Foundation’s team reached out to of note, inviting me to prepare and deliver a series of lectures on legal aspects of the music industry. With BATYR LAB’s participants, we have discussed copyright, licensing, and the responsible use of AI. I also had a chance to talk about my favourite artists when discussing legal implications of sampling, interpolation and making covers! A huge-huge thank you to Nargiz Shukenova, Kamila Narysheva, and Alina Torebek for this opportunity! It was a great honour and pure delight to be a part of BATYR LAB. Following the residency, six finalists were awarded grants to work on their demos, record and release their projects.
