The Ministry of Environment of Sri Lanka remains committed for the management of the environment and natural resources of the country, maintaining the equilibrium between the trends in rapid economic development and use of natural resource base. Social and economic behavior of the increasing human population has put a major threat in achieving these objectives. The Ministry has framed key policies for adoption in management of environment and natural resources of the country. These policies are implemented with the participation of stakeholders including government, agencies, NGO's and communities.

Implementation of Regional Project on “Strengthening Resilience of Vulnerable Communities in Sri Lanka and India to Increased Impacts of Climate Change” (ADAPT4R) =================================== Ministry of Environment, Wildlife, Forest Resources, Water Supply, Plantation and Community Infrastructure in-collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP) has submitted a proposal for a regional project on “Strengthening resilience of vulnerable communities in Sri Lanka and India to increase impacts of climate change” to the Adaptation Fund and it has been approved by the Adaptation Fund Board. The project’s goal is to strengthen the climate change adaptive capacity and food security of vulnerable communities in Sri Lanka’s dry zone and India’s eastern coastal states, utilizing a regional, integrated approach. The project will enable vulnerable groups to use Last Mile Climate Services (LMCS), to plan and implement climate resilient adaptation measures which are best suited for different livelihoods and enhance linkages to existing financial services. The project period is five years and the total financial grant of USD 13,995,524 has been allocated between the two countries. In Sri Lanka, the project will be implemented in Monaragala, Trincomalee, Mannar, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya and Kurunegala districts. Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between Mr B K Prabath Chandrakeerthi Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Wildlife, Forest Resources, Water Supply, Plantation and Community Infrastructure on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka and Mr Abdur Rahim Siddiqui, WFP Representative and Country Director of the World Food Programme on 10th October 2024 at the Ministry.

Sri Lanka takes a bold step towards climate resilience! With support from the Green Climate Fund under the 3rd GCF Readiness Project, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Ministry of Environment have jointly initiated the formulation of Sri Lanka's first-ever Climate-Smart Agriculture Investment Plan. Sri Lanka Climate Fund “Certificate Awarding Ceremony” ==================================== Dipped Products PLC achieved its Organizational-Level Greenhouse Gas Statement Verification for its Organizational-Level Greenhouse Gas Emission for the year 2023 - 2024. This verification aligns with ISO 14064-1 Specification, providing comprehensive guidance for the quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals at the organizational level. The awarding ceremony was held on 5th August at the Ministry of Environment. The certificate was awarded by Mr. B.K. The Inception Workshop for the preparation of the project proposal on “Promoting Sustainable Economic Benefits through the Conservation of Critical Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in the Eastern and Southern Coastal Region of Sri Lanka” ================================================ Project concept on Promoting Sustainable Economic Benefits through the Conservation of Critical Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in the Eastern and Southern Coastal Region of Sri Lanka was developed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) under the guidance of Ministry of Environment, and it has been approved for funding under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Cycle 08. This concept needs to be further developed into a project proposal that needs to be submitted for approval of the GEF council by end of 2024. Accordingly on August 13, 2024, a significant milestone was reached with the Inception Workshop for the preparation of project proposal of the above project, held at Waters Edge, this workshop brought together key figures in environmental conservation and sustainable development. The event was graced by opening remarks from Ms. R.H.M.P. Abeykoon, Additional Secretary (Environment Policy & Planning) on behalf of the Ministry of Environment, and Ms. Azusa Kubota, Resident Representative of UNDP on behalf of UNDP. Their insights set a positive tone for the project’s ambitious goals. This initiative aligns with the National Environmental Action Plan (NEAP) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (2022-2030). It focuses on enhancing the management effectiveness of protected areas, both terrestrial and marine, and aims to restore degraded wetlands, forests, and agricultural lands across Batticaloa, Ampara, and Hambantota districts. The aim of this workshop was to aware and gather further comments and suggestions to develop the appropriate comprehensive project proposal. The team of consultants provided an overview of the Project Identification Form which was submitted to the GEF and process of the preparation of full project proposal.
