UNIDO is a specialized agency of the United Nations promoting and accelerating #sustainable #industrial #development.
Info
UNIDO is a specialized agency of the United Nations with a unique mandate to promote, dynamize and accelerate industrial development. Our mandate is reflected in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9: “Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation”, but UNIDO’s activities contribute to all the SDGs. UNIDO’s vision is a world without poverty and hunger, where industry drives low-emission economies, improves living standards, and preserves the livable environment for present and future generations, leaving no one behind. UNIDO provides support to its 173 Member States through four mandated functions: technical cooperation; action-oriented research and policy-advisory services; normative standards-related activities; and fostering partnerships for knowledge and technology transfer. Our work is concentrated on three focus areas: - ending hunger by helping businesses from farm to fork; - stopping climate breakdown by using renewable energy and energy efficiency to reduce industrial greenhouse gas emissions; and - supporting sustainable supply chains so that developing country producers get a fair deal and scarce resources are preserved.

How does gender inequality affect #women? When girls miss out on secondary and higher education, they lose access to skills and job opportunities. This limits economic growth and social progress. If women fully participated in the workforce, national economies could grow by double digits! 💡What can we do? Girls: Stay in school, seek mentorship, and confidently pursue opportunities. Women: Challenge biases, expand networks and aim for financial independence. Men and Boys: Be allies for gender equality – work alongside women for equal rights, actively promote inclusive environments, and take up an equal share of care work. Let’s build a future where everyone thrives! #GenderEquality #UNIDOGender #UNWomen

🚀 The multiplier effect of industrial jobs Despite rapid technological advancements and automation of many industrial processes, #manufacturing remains a powerful engine for economic growth and job creation. New research shows that for every job created in manufacturing, 2.2 jobs are generated in other sectors. This multiplier effect is twice as large as that of non-manufacturing industries and three times higher than the average for modern services in advanced countries and developing ones. 🌍 Even in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, strengthening local industrial ecosystems is essential for creating productive, long-term jobs. In our recent discussions with Colombia #UNIDO reaffirms our commitment with the LAC region. We discussed some key areas where UNIDO’s expertise can make a transformative impact. 🤝 UNIDO-UNODC Partnership: The UNIDO-UNODC Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in November 2024 paves the way for new collaboration, particularly in alternative development and illicit crop substitution. Recent engagements in Bogotá have identified concrete steps to operationalize this cooperation. 🌱 A Sustainable Future for Catatumbo: UNIDO is working closely with the Agency of Territorial Renewal (ART) and the Directorate of Illicit Crop Substitution (DSCI) to support communities in Catatumbo. Through industrialization of coffee, cacao, bananas, aquaculture, and livestock, coupled with skills development for youth and women, we aim to replace illicit crops with sustainable agricultural value chains. The success of this USD 13 million initiative will depend on securing vital funding, and we welcome collaborative efforts to mobilize support. 🚀 A Call for Action: Strategic partnerships and collaborative investment will be key to achieving these ambitious goals. We look forward to working with governments, international organizations, and private sector partners to turn these initiatives into reality. #SustainableDevelopment #Industrialization #LAC #Colombia #Partnerships #CircularEconomy #GreenEnergy #EconomicGrowth Gunther Beger UNODC
