Sri Lanka Climate Fund “Certificate Awarding Ceremony” ==================================== Dipped Products PLC achieved its Organizational-Level Greenhouse Gas Statement Verification for its Organizational-Level Greenhouse Gas Emission for the year 2023 - 2024. This verification aligns with ISO 14064-1 Specification, providing comprehensive guidance for the quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals at the organizational level. The awarding ceremony was held on 5th August at the Ministry of Environment. The certificate was awarded by Mr. B.K. The Inception Workshop for the preparation of the project proposal on “Promoting Sustainable Economic Benefits through the Conservation of Critical Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in the Eastern and Southern Coastal Region of Sri Lanka” ================================================ Project concept on Promoting Sustainable Economic Benefits through the Conservation of Critical Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in the Eastern and Southern Coastal Region of Sri Lanka was developed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) under the guidance of Ministry of Environment, and it has been approved for funding under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Cycle 08. This concept needs to be further developed into a project proposal that needs to be submitted for approval of the GEF council by end of 2024. Accordingly on August 13, 2024, a significant milestone was reached with the Inception Workshop for the preparation of project proposal of the above project, held at Waters Edge, this workshop brought together key figures in environmental conservation and sustainable development. The event was graced by opening remarks from Ms. R.H.M.P. Abeykoon, Additional Secretary (Environment Policy & Planning) on behalf of the Ministry of Environment, and Ms. Azusa Kubota, Resident Representative of UNDP on behalf of UNDP. Their insights set a positive tone for the project’s ambitious goals. This initiative aligns with the National Environmental Action Plan (NEAP) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (2022-2030). It focuses on enhancing the management effectiveness of protected areas, both terrestrial and marine, and aims to restore degraded wetlands, forests, and agricultural lands across Batticaloa, Ampara, and Hambantota districts. The aim of this workshop was to aware and gather further comments and suggestions to develop the appropriate comprehensive project proposal. The team of consultants provided an overview of the Project Identification Form which was submitted to the GEF and process of the preparation of full project proposal. 

සමාජය තුළ පරිසර විශය ක්ෂේත්රය පිළිබද සාධනීය කතිකාවතක් ගොඩනැංවීම සදහා තරුණ පරපුරේ දායකත්වය ලබාගැනීම අරමුණු කරගනිමින්, ජගත් පරිසර දිනයට සමගාමීව පවත්වනු ලබන "සොභා චලන සිතුවම්" කෙටි චිත්රපට තරගාවලියට නිර්මාණාත්මක ප්රවේශයක් ලබා දීම පිණිස සංවිධානය කරනු ලැබූ එක්දින කෙටි චිත්රපට නිර්මාණකරනය පිළිබද ප්රායෝගික වැඩමුළුව 2024.07.03 දින පරිසර අමාත්යාංශ ශ්රවනාගාරයේදී පවත්වන ලදී. අමාත්යාංශ ලේකම් බී.කේ. ප්රභාත් චන්ද්රකීර්ති මහතා, අතිරේක ලේකම්(පරිසර ව්යාපෘති හා අධ්යාපන පුහුණු) ඩබ්.ජී. කුමාරගම මහත්මිය, අධ්යක්ෂ(පරිසර අධ්යාපන පුහුණු, ප්රවර්ධන හා විශේෂ ව්යාපෘති) ආර්.එස්.කේ. දූල්වලගේ මහතා ඇතුලු අමාත්යාංශ නිලධාරීන් රැසක් මෙම අවස්තාව සදහා සහභාගී විය.

2024.06.28 දින ගරු ජනාධිපති රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ මැතිතුමාගේ ප්රධානත්වයෙන් පැවති පරිසර සම්මාන උළෙල - 2024

ගරු පරිසර රාජ්ය අමාත්ය සතාසිවම් වියාලේන්ද්රන් මහතා 2024.06.24 වන දින පරිසර අමාත්යාංශයේ නව අමාත්ය ධූරයේ රාජකාරී ආරම්භ කරන ලදී. Hon. Sathasiwam Viyalanderan assumed duties as State minister of Environment on 2024.06.24.

ජාතික හරිත ප්රසම්පාදන ප්රතිපත්තිය යනු තිරසර සංවර්ධන අරමුණු සාක්ෂාත් කර ගැනීම උදෙසා පරිසර අමාත්යංශය විසින් මුදල් අමාත්යාංශය සහ ජාතික ප්රසම්පාදන කොමිෂන් සභාව ඇතුළු පාර්ශව ආයතන සමග සහෝයෝගිත්වයෙන් යුතුව සකස් කරනු ලැබූ වැදගත් වූ ජාතික ප්රතිපත්තියකි. තිරසර සංවර්ධනයෙහි ලා තිරසාර පරිභෝජනය මහඟු දායකත්වයක් සපයන අතර ඒ සඳහා පුද්ගලයානුබද්ධව, සමාජයීයව මෙන්ම ආයතනිකව ආකල්පමය වශයෙන් වෙනස් වීම කාලෝචිත වේ. සම්ප්රදායික රාජ්ය ප්රසම්පාදනය සඳහා හරිත සංරචක ඇතුලත් කිරීම හෙවත් හරිත රාජ්ය ප්සම්පාදනය ක්රියාත්මක කිරීම මගින් රාජ්ය අංශයේ තිරසාර පරිභෝජනය ප්රවර්ධනය සිදු කිරීම ගෝලීය වශයෙන් නිර්දේශ කර ඇති වැදගත් මුලරම්භකයකි. මේ සඳහා අනුග්රහය සපයමින් 12 වන තිරසාර සංවර්ධන අභිමතාර්ථය යටතේ ඉලක්ක අංක 12.7 හඳුන්වා දී ඇත.  එම වගකීම සඵල කරනු වස් ප්රතිපත්තිමය දිශානතියක් ඔස්සේ රාජ්ය ප්රසම්පාදනය හරිතකරණය මගින් අප රාජ්ය අංශයට නව මුහුණුවරක් එක් කිරීමේ අරමුණින් හඳුන්වා දෙනු ලබන මෙම ජාතික ප්රතිපත්තිය විශ්ව පරිසර දිනය යෙදුන 2024.06.05 දින ජනාධිපති ලේකම් කාර්යාලයේ පැවති සැමරුම් උත්සවයේ දී අතිගරු ජනාධිපතිතුමන් විසින් එළිදක්වනු ලැබිණි.

"Desertification and Drought Day 2024 “ Addressing Desertification, Land Degradation, and Drought 17th June 2024 ======================================== 1. Introduction: The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) was established in 1994 to tackle desertification, land degradation, and drought globally. Sri Lanka, recognizing the significance of these issues, became a party to the convention in 1995, with the Ministry of Environment acting as the National Focal Point. 1.1. Global Context: Desertification, land degradation, and droughts pose significant challenges globally, impacting biodiversity, socio-economic stability, and sustainable development. Recognizing the severity of the issue, the United Nations designated June 17 as "Desertification and Drought Day" to raise awareness and promote solutions. 1.2. Desertification and Drought Day 2024: The focus of the desertification and drought day in 2024 is on the future of land stewardship, highlighting the importance of sustainable land management. With 40% of the world's land degraded, this year's theme, "United for Land. Our Legacy. Our Future." emphasizes the need for collective action to preserve land for future generations. This theme spotlights “Land Stewardship” which involves preserving natural environments, biodiversity, and ecological values through sustainable practices. It emphasizes caring for land regardless of ownership, considering ecological, economic, social, and cultural dimensions. Strategies that can be adopted for promoting land stewardship includes sustainable land management practices, restoring natural habitats, enhancing traditional knowledge, and promoting biodiversity. 1.3. The Status of Land Degradation and Drought in Sri Lanka & Commemorating "Desertification and Drought Day 2024 Sri Lanka faces challenges with 34% of its land area experiencing declining productivity or stress. Approximately 50% of the land is degraded, with issues like soil fertility decline and erosion affecting agricultural output. Droughts, primarily in southeastern, north central, and northwestern regions, severely impact livelihoods and necessitate relief efforts, posing challenges due to increasing unpredictability and frequency of rainfall. Sri Lanka, as a party to the UNCCD, recognizes the importance of combating desertification, land degradation, and droughts. In this perspective, the promoting the "Land Stewardship" approach is crucial for addressing the specific needs of Sri Lanka's land management. Thus, the Natural Resources Management Division (NRM) of the Ministry of Environment planning to commemorate "Desertification and Drought Day in 2024" in collaboration with “Climate Resilient Integrated Water Management Project (CRIWMP)”, financed by the Green Climate Fund, and implemented by the Ministry of Irrigation with the technical support from UNDP.

ජූනි 4 වන දිනට යෙදුන ප්ලාස්ටික් අපද්රව්ය කළමනාකරණ දින සැමරුම් වැඩසටහන 1972 වසරේ ස්වීඩනයේ ස්ටොක්හෝම් නුවරදී පවත්වන ලද එක්සත් ජාතීන්ගේ මහා සම්මේලනයේදී පරිසරය සුරැකීමේ අවශ්යතාවය සමස්ත ලෝක ප්රජාවගේම දැඩි අවධානය යොමු කරවීමේ ප්රතිඵලයක් ලෙස බිහි වූ එක්සත් ජාතීන්ගේ පරිසර වැඩසටහනේ සමාරම්භය 1972 ජූනි 5 වන දින සිදු වූ අතර මෙම සුවිශේෂී දිනය සැමරීම උදෙසා සෑම වසරකම ජූනි 5 වන දින ජගත් පරිසර දිනය ලෙස නම් කර ඇත. එතැන් පටන් දශක 5කට වඩා වැඩි කාලයක් කාලීන පාරිසරික තේමාවන් ඔස්සේ සමරනු ලබන ජගත් පරිසර දිනය මෙවර “ඵලදායී භුමි පරිහරණයෙන් සුවදායී දෙරණක්” (Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience) යන තේමාව යටතේ සැමරීම සිදු කරනු ලැබීය. ජගත් පරිසර දිනයට සමගාමීව ජාතික පාරිසරික සතිය ප්රකාශයට පත් කර ඇති චක්රලේඛනයට අනුව ජූනි 4 වන දිනය ප්ලාස්ටික් අපද්රව්ය කළමනාකරණ දිනය ලෙස නම් ඇති අතර ඒ අනුව අප අමාත්යාංශයේ උපදේශකත්වයෙන් යුතුව වෙරළ සංරක්ෂණ සහ වෙරළ සම්පත් කළමනාකරණ දෙපාර්තුමේන්තුවේ සංවිධානයෙන් බෙන්තොට වෙරළ තිරයේදී ප්ලාස්ටික් අපද්රව්ය කළමනාකරණ දිනය සැමරීම සිදු කරන ලදී. බෙන්තොට අධ්යාපන කලාපයට අදාළ පාසල් කිහිපයක දරුවන්ගේ දායකත්වයෙන් පවත්වන ලද පාගමනක්, වෙරළ තිරයේ පැළ සිටුවීමේ වැඩසටහනක්, වෙරළ පවිත්ර කිරීමේ වැඩසටහනක්,පාරිසරික වටිනාකමකින් යුතු තේමාවන් පෙරටු කර ගත් නාම පුවරු ස්ථාපිත කිරීමේ වැඩසටහනක් මෙන්ම පාසල් සිසුන් දැනුවත් කිරීමේ දේශන කිහිපයක්ම පවත්වන ලදී. එලෙසම “හරිත අනාගතයක් සඳහා ගමන” යන තේමාව පෙරදැරි කර ගෙන පවත්වන ලද චිත්ර හා කථික තරඟයේ ජයග්රාහකයින් සඳහා ත්යාග ප්රධානය කිරීමක් ද පවත්වන ලදී. තවද නීල හරිත ධජ සංකල්පය යටතේ මාධ්ය සාකච්ඡාවක් ද මෙහිදී සංවිධානය කර තිබිණි. මේ සඳහා මධ්යම පරිසර අධිකාරිය, සමුද්රීය පරිසර ආරක්ෂණ අධිකාරි, බෙන්තොට ප්රාදේශීය ලේකම් කාර්යාලය ඇතුලු රාජ්ය ආයතන කිහිපයක් මේ සඳහා සහයෝගය දක්වන ලදී.
