Jumper for their pioneering contributions to protein design and structure prediction. Their work is transforming how we understand and manipulate proteins, creating entirely new possibilities in medicine, materials science, and beyond. 🚀 We couldn't be more inspired by this achievement, which points to a future where biology is reshaped by engineering proteins, including enzymes, playing a crucial role across industries - from pharmaceuticals and chemical manufacturing to food or life sciences.     BREAKING NEWS The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with one half to David Baker “for computational protein design” and the other half jointly to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper “for protein structure prediction.”   The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2024 is about proteins, life’s ingenious chemical tools. David Baker has succeeded with the almost impossible feat of building entirely new kinds of proteins. Demis Hassabis and John Jumper have developed an AI model to solve a 50-year-old problem: predicting proteins’ complex structures. These discoveries hold enormous potential.   The diversity of life testifies to proteins’ amazing capacity as chemical tools. They control and drive all the chemical reactions that together are the basis of life. Proteins also function as hormones, signal substances, antibodies and the building blocks of different tissues.   Proteins generally consist of 20 different amino acids, which can be described as life’s building blocks. In 2003, David Baker succeeded in using these blocks to design a new protein that was unlike any other protein. Since then, his research group has produced one imaginative protein creation after another, including proteins that can be used as pharmaceuticals, vaccines, nanomaterials and tiny sensors.   The second discovery concerns the prediction of protein structures. In proteins, amino acids are linked together in long strings that fold up to make a three-dimensional structure, which is decisive for the protein’s function. Since the 1970s, researchers had tried to predict protein structures from amino acid sequences, but this was notoriously difficult. However, four years ago, there was a stunning breakthrough.   In 2020, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper presented an AI model called AlphaFold2. With its help, they have been able to predict the structure of virtually all the 200 million proteins that researchers have identified. Since their breakthrough, AlphaFold2 has been used by more than two million people from 190 countries. Among a myriad of scientific applications, researchers can now better understand antibiotic resistance and create images of enzymes that can decompose plastic.   Life could not exist without proteins. That we can now predict protein structures and design our own proteins confers the greatest benefit to humankind.     VP Programs at Biomatter | Technical-Commercial Strategy | Innovation | Reimagining what is possible with enzymes

    After an incredible week at #GRC Biocatalysis 2024, I wanted to take a few days to gather my thoughts and capture learnings from what is one of my favourite conferences in the calendar. It was a pleasure to be able to present what Biomatter is doing on the stage next to established folks like Stefan Lutz, who did an excellent intro to mRNA on my behalf as well as the other industry folks- Martin Hayes, Kai Baldenius, Hans Iding, Richard Fox and Lara Zetzsche. As Biomatter looks to change the way we think about engineering enzymes it was exciting to share tangible examples of processes developed from our tech, all whilst having some of the best minds in this space meet me with enthusiasm and curiosity. All thanks of course to Sabine Flitsch and Carlos for the invite to speak and for organising a marvellous event. Looking forward to the next edition with Mélanie Hall , Radka Snajdrova already with of course my congratulations to my friends Scott France and Dörthe for being elected to run the show in 2028! So- what did I take away that maybe some in my network want to get their brains ticking over. 1) mRNA is here to stay, and we need tools and raw materials to meet the future demand. >30 tonnes of RNA materials expected to be needed to meet 2030 demand. Fortunately this is something Biomatter has been ahead of the curve on for a while and we will continue to lead the way 2) Pharma is continuing to focus on PMI, but at the same time we are still seeing glucose used as the default hydride source. Maybe it’s time to change that. There’s some obvious reasons we still rely on GDH, what innovations could replace this workhorse? 3) Folks are very excited about the rate of change in the enzyme ML/AI space for accessing new enzymes. With new models coming out so regularly, how are we keeping on top of what the best in class for both academic and industry use. One major challenge remains the accuracy of a lot of the current models in predicting functional enzymes. While some folks are pushing hard down the “more data” to train on track, others are continuing to show that blending physics with AI gives the best performance in terms of speed and accuracy. A bonus thought, the complexity of reactions we are able to unlock is increasing all the time, from modified nucleosides (Sarah Lovelock ) to controlled radical mechanisms,(Yang Yang). Echoing the thoughts of Jared Lewis as to what the next “do it all platform” enzyme will look like. What the most needed reaction we cannot yet do reliably with enzymes? Lastly, the GRC is not just about the latest and greatest science, there’s always old and new friends and catch up with. A pleasure as always (Rachel Heath , Christian Schnepel, Nicholas Turner, John Woodley , Bethany Hogg Bo Couture, and Bettina Nestl amongst others I have surely forgotten along with the networking rockstar that is Johanna Thompson (fd Löfgren) Already looking forward to the next edition.
