The hidden potential of Zhytomyr – Sokolovskyi Quarry 🌊 Once a granite quarry, today it is a wild natural area beloved by locals and visitors alike. The Sokolovskyi Quarry attracts divers with its depth and recreation seekers with its rocky shores and clear water. However, the lack of proper infrastructure presents significant challenges and poses risks for visitors. How can we make this space safe, comfortable, and accessible to the community while preserving its natural uniqueness? We are exploring answers to these questions through participatory practices, engaging residents, experts, and city officials in joint discussions to shape a vision for the site’s development. Ro3kvit is working to help the community develop well-thought-out revitalization scenarios that consider the interests of all users. Spaces can be transformed through active community participation, dialogue, and collaboration. Together, we can turn the quarry into a safe recreational area and set an example of responsible urban development. Read more in the carousel! We sincerely thank all the participants and project partners! Let us know in the comments which places in your city need to be reimagined 💬👇 The urban forums are organized by the Estonian Association of Architects and the Ro3kvit Urban Coalition for Ukraine, in collaboration with the city of Zhytomyr. • The UREHERIT project has unveiled a new report: Assessment Methods of Architectural Heritage: A Summary on Legal Framework, Methodologies, and Practice in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Its goal is to support Ukrainian architects in the restoration and preservation of cultural heritage through knowledge-sharing and collaboration. The report focuses on four key assessment tools: >>DIVE (Norway): A method for analyzing cultural and architectural value in urban planning. >>Kulturhistorisk Värdering av Bebyggelse (Sweden): A holistic approach evaluating historical, architectural, and technical layers of heritage. >>SAVE (Denmark): A screening tool for assessing large numbers of buildings and identifying those with significant cultural value. >>Fredningsgennemgangen (Denmark): A detailed classification system that complements SAVE’s broader evaluations. These methods highlight the importance of thorough, systematic evaluations to guide effective preservation and sustainable planning. This report is part of UREHERIT’s project developed by leading experts from The Royal Danish Academy in collaboration with the National Union of Architects of Ukraine/Національна Спілка Архітекторів України. 📅 Looking ahead, UREHERIT will host its third conference in Vilnius, where the findings will be discussed further. . #ureherit #architectsforUkraine #WeStandWithUkraine #RecoverUkraine #CulturalHeritage #culture #buildbackbetter

The former Kosmos cinema in Zhytomyr became the focal point of discussion during the first Urban Forum, organized as a two-day hackathon. Experts from Ukraine, Estonia, and the Netherlands came together to explore new solutions for the future of the cinema building and the surrounding area. Urban forums play a key role in engaging communities in the transformation of urban spaces. Each forum provides a platform for local residents, professionals, and city authorities to collaboratively shape the vision for their cities. These events integrate best international practices while addressing local needs. Ro3kvit systematically promotes participatory approaches in Ukraine, recognizing that community engagement is a fundamental principle of urban development — one that ensures sustainable and livable spaces. The Kosmos cinema and its adjacent territory require reorganization and rethinking. Its revitalization is only possible with the active involvement of the community — because it is the residents who should decide the future of this place. The cinema has the potential to become a hub for cultural and social initiatives, contributing to the city's and community’s development. 📌 Swipe through the carousel for more details and share the story about Kosmos 🤍 The urban forums are organized by the Estonian Association of Architects and the Ro3kvit Urban Coalition for Ukraine, in collaboration with the city of Zhytomyr. • UREHERIT, in collaboration with the Kharkiv School of Architecture (KhSA), is excited to announce KhSA’s involvement in the WG “Holistic Renovation of Modernist Housing in Ukraine” project. Led by the Lithuanian Architects Association this initiative is part of the UREHERIT, which explores the challenges and opportunities of post-war mass housing neighborhoods in Ukraine and across Europe. The group’s objectives include evaluating the condition, cultural value, and potential of these neighborhoods, while addressing economic, social, technological, and environmental challenges. Fouth-year students from Kharkiv School of Architecturen will critically analyze a residential neighborhood as part of the elective course “Theory of the Neighborhood and Its (Non)Death.” They will create experimental apartment building projects, integrating modern design solutions into existing structures based on the renovation recommendations. The course, led by Oleksandr Anisimov, aligns with KhSA’s mission to reimagine heritage and foster innovative, critical educational approaches. Supported by UREHERIT's working group, this initiative addresses the complex challenges of preserving post-war mass housing, contributing to a sustainable and democratic future for Ukraine. The first Urban Forums, led by Estonian Association of Architects as part of the #UREHERIT, brought transformative discussions to Zhytomyr. Over two sessions, interdisciplinary teams focused on the potential of the "Kosmos" cinema and Sokolovski Quarry areas. On September 28-29: The first Urban Forum was held at the “Kosmos” cinema in South-East Zhytomyr, an iconic but abandoned building that once hosted films, discos, and community events. Teams will explore the future of this 1988-era cinema and its surroundings, focusing on revitalizing the space to serve modern needs while enhancing safety and social cohesion. Team leads: Ülar Mark (EE), Lembit-Kaur Stöör (EE), Marjo van Schaik (NL), Marianna Kuzemska (UA), Daryna Pasuta (UA) "In these challenging and rapidly changing times, it's especially important to integrate broad democratic decision-making mechanisms into spatial planning. It’s no secret that various stakeholders—city administrations, specialists, politicians, developers, and users—often see spatial issues differently. The urban forums foster balanced dialogue and serve as neutral ground where no party has a position of power," said Ülar Mark, an Estonian organizer of the forum. On October 4-5: The second Urban Forum focused on the Sokolovskyi Quarry in North-West Zhytomyr, a unique flooded granite site popular with locals for recreation but lacking infrastructure. Participants analyzed how this “quasi-natural” landscape, with its deep waters and diverse user groups, can be transformed into a safe, functional, and healing space for the community. Team leads: Karin Bachmann (EE), Siim Tanel Tõnisson (EE), Ra Martin Puhkan (EE), Inna Dobrovolska (UA), Daryna Pasuta (UA)  The goal of the forums is to create a platform connecting local politicians, architects, developers, entrepreneurs, state representatives, and the local community to discuss urban planning challenges, strengthen trust among participants, and develop joint proposals for urban area development. Participants included city residents, architects, urban planners, activists, artists, architecture students, and all those interested in reviving urban spaces and preserving Ukraine’s heritage. The ideas from the five discussion groups will be consolidated and presented to Zhytomyr's city administration for future action. . The Urban Forums were organized by the Estonian Association of Architects and Ro3kvit: Urban Coalition for Ukraine in collaboration with the city of Zhytomyr. The forums are funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe program as part of the international cultural project "UREHERIT”. . #architectsforUkraine #WeStandWithUkraine #RecoverUkraine #CulturalHeritage #buildbackbetter #creativeeurope
