👁️ Imagine losing your vision, and not having the funds to fix the problem, or being unable to access treatment providers. This is the reality for many people around the world. According to the World Health Organisation, one billion people have a vision impairment issue that could have been prevented or is yet to be addressed. The world faces considerable challenges in terms of eye care, including inequalities in the coverage of prevention and treatment services. On #WorldSightDay, we're highlighting Sightsavers, an international charity operating in more than 30 countries to prevent avoidable blindness. With financial support from the Eurofins Foundation, Sightsavers India has provided more than 225,000 eye screenings in rural areas of India since 2021, and facilitated over 8,000 sight-saving cataract surgeries. Did you know that over half the global population is estimated to have sensitive skin? The findings are based on skin sensitivity studies spanning five continents across two decades, with data compiled by the Frontiers in Medicine Journal. Sensitive skin is characterised by sensations of discomfort such as tingling, burning, itching and prickling. The increasing prevalence of sensitive skin is driving cosmetics manufacturers to develop adapted products, such as creams, serums, sprays and oils that claim to be "sensitive skin friendly" or “anti-irritating”. To protect consumer safety, rigorous testing is essential to ensure the accuracy of these claims. Eurofins Cosmetics & Personal Care companies and laboratories are at the forefront of innovation when it comes to testing cosmetics and personal care products. One such innovation is NERVESKIN, an ex vivo model developed by Eurofins BIO-EC in collaboration with the University of Western Brittany in France. This model mimics the characteristics of sensitive skin by incorporating human sensory neurons derived from differentiated stem cells, effectively simulating the neuro-cutaneous interactions that lead to itching and discomfort. Another innovation from Eurofins Spincontrol is the Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) method, which objectively assesses the calming or soothing effects of cosmetic products. This in vivo method makes it possible to quantify the skin's subconscious response to a stimulus. For example, if a reduction in the sensation associated with a heat source on sensitive skin is observed after application of a product, the soothing effects of the product can be validated.
