Eurostat a republié ceci
I am delighted to share some key takeaways from the conference, 'Closing Data Gaps on Climate Change,' co-organised by Eurostat and the Directorate for “Statistics” at the European Central Bank, in Brussels. It was truly the European statistical forum that brought together the Presidents and Directors-General of national statistical institutes and Directors of Statistics of national central banks, as well as international experts on climate change. We had two days of sharing practices, innovation projects and setting aspirations on closing data gaps in topics such as : ⛽ greenhouse gas 👣 carbon footprints 🧾 energy accounts, 💹 climate expenditures including investments, 🌡️ climate mitigation, ⚡ climate-related risks. The conference was addressed by Mr Valdis Dombrovskis, the Commissioner for Economy and Productivity, and Ms Fritzi Köhler-Geib, a Board Member of Deutsche Bundesbank. Sir Professor Jim Skea, the Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, delivered the keynote speech. And here are some of my key takeaways from the event: ▫️ Enhancing statistics is key to supporting global climate adaptation and resilience. It requires a collective effort by statistical agencies, central banks, policymakers, and corporations. ▫️ A multitude of projects and initiatives are running, therefore the importance of coordinating future efforts of the NSIs and national banks to close climate data gaps and to minimise the reporting burden on businesses is higher than ever. ▫️ Statistical authorities should engage in providing data on climate adaptation to prevent damage by extreme weather events, such as the recent wildfires in California or floods in parts of Europe. ▫️ It’s essential that we acquire more comprehensive data on greenhouse gas emissions and energy usage, climate mitigation investments , climate-related financial risks and georeferenced statistical information for improved climate adaptation strategies. ▫️ Conference sessions emphasised the necessity for detailed statistics on emissions, energy accounts, climate investments, and risks. ▫️ There is an imperative to use data from corporate sustainability reporting to ease the reporting burden on businesses. Upon reflection of the outcomes from the conference, Eurostat and the Directorate-General Statistics of the European Central Bank will collaborate to establish joint priorities to address critical data gaps related to climate change in the coming months. #ClimateChangeData #StatisticalInnovation #ESF2025 European Central Bank Claudia Mann
