Investors are 'once again star gazing', Crunchbase reports. Space tech funding has 'jumped'. Space tech startups have nearly reached last year's venture funding total – and just two-thirds into this year. But in respect of making an impact here on Earth, in sustainability, communication, connectivity or defense, for example, growth-stage tech companies are the ones to watch – and the ones who need generous and sustained investment. These companies are proven. They just need to scale. Like the sector as a whole, they’re at an inflection point, accelerating the growth of the industry. More and more businesses in New Zealand 'have got their eyes on the skies', EY reports. This episode of EY's podcast, Digital Tomorrow, focuses on how satellite technology has the power to transform industries. Its presenter, Grant Hunkin of EY Oceania, speaks to business owners about how they're using space-enabled technology, and Hunkin – rightly – believes businesses and government in New Zealand are only just grasping the potential scope of geospatial information. New Zealand is just one of a large number of countries going long on space. As the sector grows, so does the number of use cases for space technology. We've barely begun to scratch the surface of what this tech is capable of – or of how it will transform our lives for the better. Tyche, the UK's first-ever Earth-imaging satellite, was launched in the second half of August. The UK has said it aims to be a legitimate space power by 2030. This is undoubtedly a major step forward. More and more countries, recognising that space is becoming the spine of the world economy, are investing in their own space capacity. We've seen this across Europe, in the Middle East, in India and Japan, and – of course – in the USA and China, who are undoubtedly leading what has been called the new 'space race'. Britain was, until the launch of Tyche, the only G8 nation without a sovereign satellite imaging capability. This satellite is intended as a 'demonstrator', which will be followed by a network of satellites that use a variety of sensors. There are interesting conversations worth having about the European Space Agency - ESA, and the new UK government, which has just committed to an expansion of ESA's presence, is having one of them now. The claim is that the UK does not see a good return on investment in terms of contracts – though ESA says that the UK gets more than its fair share in value in terms of science programmes. What is certainly true is that ESA has played a very important role in making European space what it is. In Europe and elsewhere, space is now at a hinge point: with generous and sustained public and private investment, it can really take off. This satellite footage, of a fire in Northern California, is striking in its level of detail, as well as what it shows. Space-enabled technologies, from cameras to software, are now able to capture not just high-resolution images of wildfires, but methane plumes, flooding and more with granular precision. This is why, in fields like sustainability, defence and navigation, space-enabled technology has become absolutely indispensable. Kayrros, a NewSpace portfolio company, has worked with AXA Digital Commercial Platform to develop a state-of-the-art wildfire risk prevention service for businesses, powered by AI. In doing so, Kayrros is helping to reshape the way we think about fires: moving the world from response to prediction and prevention. That is an enormous shift. As we all know, wildfires cost billions – and the damage done in non-monetary terms is yet more devastating. This is a real indication of how space-enabled technology can, and is, changing the world. So many of the things in modern life – things we often take for granted – were developed for space. Wireless headphones. Bluetooth. Cushioned sneakers. Now we learn that the water-repellant swimsuits worn by athletes at the Paris Olympics were inspired by protective coating developed for space exploration.
