🏆 Two startups incubated at UPTEC - Science and Technology Park of University of Porto, connected and NIUM, have been recognized at the 2024 Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for Brazilian and Portuguese Technology Companies, in Macau. - connected, a space industry startup, received first place in the competition for its innovative IoT connectivity solutions aimed at enhancing communication in remote areas with limited cellular coverage. As CEO and co-founder Tiago Rebelo stated, this award not only introduces the company to the local ecosystem, but also builds bridges and explores synergies in Asia. - NIUM took home the award for greatest potential for transfer of technological value, with its groundbreaking system that replicates the human gastrointestinal system on a chip. This technology holds immense potential for developing predictive models for innovative food products and personalized nutritional recommendations. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most pressing global health threats. A recent Lancet study estimates that AMR was responsible for 4.71 million deaths, with 1.14 million directly attributable to bacterial resistance (in 2021). According to the study, the number of annual deaths could climb to over 8 million by 2050. The human gut microbiota plays a critical role in this challenge, acting as a reservoir for AMR genes. These resistance genes can be transferred to pathogenic bacteria, contributing to the spread of AMR throughout the body. Research has also shown that early life factors, such as the gut microbiome composition in infants, can influence the acquisition of resistance genes. Diet, too, plays a significant role—diets rich in fibre and diversity are associated with lower levels of antibiotic-resistance genes in the gut. At NIUM, we also address this challenge by analyzing metagenomic sequencing data from faecal samples. We can identify AMR genes present in the gut microbiome covering 27 drug classes, allowing for the development of tailored antibiotic therapies. Understanding and manipulating the gut microbiome, through strategies like diet and microbiome-based therapies, could be key to mitigating the spread of AMR. As AMR continues to evolve, combining innovative approaches with global intervention efforts will be essential to curbing the devastating impact of drug-resistant infections in the decades ahead.

Dear Network, The Global Wellness Institute (GWI) has published last year a report where the market was estimated at 5,6 Trillion USD in 2022. Recently, McKinsey & Company issued a report indicating a 1,8 Trillion USD market which is consistent with the figures of the GWI considering only (i) public health, prevention and personalized medicine, (ii) mental wellness and (iii) healthy eating, #nutrition and weight loss global markets. The last one (ie healthy eating, nutrition and weight loss) representing almost 60% of the $1.8T market. Interestingly, #Gut Health was recognized in the McKinsey report as one of the seven areas of growth in the #wellness space, and GWI reported that it is indeed one of the most powerful indicators of optimal #health and #wellbeing. Consumers increasingly seek tailored wellness solutions, and healthcare is increasingly moving toward #preventivemedecine.
