On the 24th and 25th of September, IN-HABIT partners from Nitra, Córdoba, and Lucca convened in Riga for the second General Assembly this year. Hosted by the Riga team in Kalnciema Quarter, the event brought together key stakeholders to discuss progress on deliverables and plan strategic activities for the upcoming year to meet remaining project objectives. Over the course of two days, attendees engaged in discussions, presentations, and workshops to develop solutions to current challenges and foster ongoing efforts to promote health and well-being in urban environments. Highlights include: - A workshop on Financial Innovation and Economic Viability, led by Peter Ramsden (The Social Research Centre), who presented novel funding approaches and facilitated group exercises to generate ideas on how to ensure long-term financial sustainability of initiatives established through the project. - A workshop on Community Psychology Research Methods conducted by the University of Córdoba (Universidad de Córdoba), which provided valuable insights into evaluating research and community engagement approaches. - A session on Exploitation Roadmaps for Key Exploitable Results, focused on developing strategies to effectively utilize key results and maximize their impact. - Discussions about the IN-HABIT app and gamification strategies. As summer winds down to autumn, it is an opportune moment to reflect on the activities undertaken during the past season. In June, research assistant Ilze Mileiko took part in the ethnographic expedition "Life by the Sea", led by researcher Guntra Aistara. Alongside anthropologists, historians, and memory preservers, the expedition explored contemporary coastal life and traditions in Kolka and Liv villages in Northern Kurzeme, particularly focusing on fishing, agricultural practices and culinary heritage. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮́𝗿𝗼𝘃𝘀𝗸𝗲́ 𝗟𝘂́𝗸𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆?  This question was the focus of the #PossibleLandscapes session for the Practice Case area of Nitra in Slovakia. 💧 The session focused specifically on Párovské Lúky, a wet area that is located very close to the city center of Nitra, just across the river, and is partly unused. 🌿 Guided by PLUS Change partners Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra (The Department of Ecology and Environmental Science at UKF Nitra) and Biobased Creations, a group of local stakeholders gathered to explore new land use visions for Párovské Lúky. Ideas included restoring biodiversity through sustainable land use practices and rewilding project, developing green recreational spaces for the community, blending nature with urban life, and enhancing the wetlands to improve flood protection. This summer, I spent an amazing 4 months exploring Latvia. I have been conducting fieldwork for my MSc thesis, studying how restoration measures affect the bee fauna in Latvian grasslands. At eight farms across the country and involved in GrassLIFE project 2017-2023, I conducted three monitoring rounds involving 45 transects in different grassland types (restored, degraded, reference). Besides all occurring bee species, floral resources were also surveyed. During my stay, I also had the chance to contribute to two other exciting research projects: -       RestPoll: Restoring Pollinator habitats across European agricultural landscapes as part of internship at Baltic Studies Centre (BSC) The data I collected will be used to support the RestPoll project, contributing to the restoration of pollinator habitats. I gained valuable field monitoring experience and bee identification skills. Special thanks to Anda Adamsone-Fiskovica and Maija Ušča for their guidance and support. -       Vegetation monitoring as part of the internship at Latvijas Dabas fonds (LDF) LDF provided the surveying sites for the 45 transects for the bee monitoring. Next to that, I assisted LDF with vegetation monitoring, in which the main scope was the monitoring and evaluation of semi-natural grassland restoration success. I learned to identify and recognize many new plant species in the field. A big thank you to the LDF team, Solvita Rūsiņa for sharing your impressive knowledge about grasslands, and to the fellow students for the great teamwork! Contributing to these projects has enriched my understanding of fieldwork, species identification, and the broader efforts to support biodiversity in agricultural landscapes. Now, it’s time to plunge into bee species identification (often quite challenging), data analyses, and writing my thesis.
