🌾Discover one of the RTU Product Development Unit’s standout prototyping projects from last year – an automated quality control device.   The device is designed to detect live insects in small grain samples, significantly reducing time-consuming manual work and enabling the expansion of work tasks beyond traditional quality control systems.   Throughout the project, we designed and developed the entire prototype in accordance with the customer’s requirements. The prototyping process included the development of device mechanics — such as the housing, conveyor, dispensers, fixing trays, etc. — as well as its electronic components, their control and a machine vision algorithm with a user interface for insect recognition and conveyor control feedback.

♻ RTU Science and Innovation Centre RTU Product Development Unit has tested a 3D printer filament made from coffee grounds and other natural fibre residues, which is not only environmentally friendly but also contributes to the efficient use of waste. ☕ The company Snow Recycle plans to use the material to make environmentally friendly coffee cups, but it also has the potential to be used for other design objects or elements. Designing a prototype for a vision training device was challenging yet rewarding. The primary hurdle was integrating electronic and mechanical components into a compact space while ensuring ergonomic comfort. Achieving seamless rotation of lenses with varying strengths required high precision and a creative approach. Through iterative design and collaboration, we've developed a user-friendly device that improves vision and significantly advances wearable tech for vision enhancement. 👓In cooperation with the company EYEDOO, the RTU Science and Innovation Centre Innovative Product Development Unit (IPDU) has developed an innovative vision training device to enhance the eye's accommodative ability. The device is head-mounted and consists of a lens-filter module, an electronics control module and a head mount. It will operate with a specifically designed and customised algorithm according to a vision training methodology developed by scientists at the University of Latvia. It will use a cloud-based IT platform to support its operation. IPDU's role was not only to address the mechanical aspects of the device but also to identify and deliver the most ergonomic and user-friendly solution.
