♻ RTU Science and Innovation Centre RTU Product Development Unit has tested a 3D printer filament made from coffee grounds and other natural fibre residues, which is not only environmentally friendly but also contributes to the efficient use of waste. ☕ The company Snow Recycle plans to use the material to make environmentally friendly coffee cups, but it also has the potential to be used for other design objects or elements. The prototype of the innovative solution were developed with the support of the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (Invest in Latvia) through the PROTOTECH programme. #EEANorwayGrants | #EEANorwayGrantsLatvia 👉 Read more: https://lnkd.in/demM8Bpv

Last but not least, I present to you the 'Aqueduct' setup. Thanks to the confidence of my supervisors, I was allowed to come up with my own idea for a machine for KU Leuven - Group T Leuven Campus. So I imagined, designed and built this 'Aqueduct' with 'Water Purification Station'. I 3D printed and laser cut the necessary components. The aqueduct carries several randomly coloured ping pong balls, representing polluted water. Thanks to a clever sluice system, one ball at a time is loaded onto the index disc. Depending on which colour is detected by the colour sensor, different things happen to the ball: It is returned to the supply, blown into one of three storage tubes (one vertical and two horizontal), or moved from the outer circle on the disc to the inner circle using a 'pick and place' system. The movement of this disc is controlled by a stepper motor which is driven by a Beckhoff Automation drive connected to a Siemens PLC. The end result should be a disc completely filled with appropriately coloured ping pong balls, representing purified water. #KULeuven #Groupt #Automation #Siemens #Beckhoff #Aqueduct

Using the most recycled plastic, PET, the same plastic that contains your soft drinks and bottled water, Engin Akinoglu has created specially tuned optical devices by coating each side of transparent plastic foils with a thin layer of gold. This innovation results in significant light confinement, leading to strong light-matter coupling between molecular vibrations and thermal radiation and forming quasi-particles known as #polaritons. Representing a hybrid of light and matter, polaritons effectively bridge the dynamic nature of light with the more static characteristics of materials and display unique properties distinct from those of either material or light alone. Prior vibrational polaritonic systems required expensive IR optics or sophisticated lithography. However, the cheap and flexible nature of PET foils allows for the industrial-scale fabrication of polaritonic devices. You can read the latest from Engin, with co-authors Dali Quan, Eliza Rokhsat, and James Hutchison, here: https://lnkd.in/g9jUcxwU This work was supported by the MCFP Sustainability Grants 2024, and utilised the Renishaw Raman Spectroscopy #inVia Qontor, Bruker Optics #LUMOS FTIR, and Quorum Technologies Limited Q150S sputter coater. #NCRISimpact #sustainability #research

inspire St. Gallen expands the possibilities to produce and investigates powders for additive manufacturing. A pilot plant for the spray drying of powders was recently installed in the inspire St. Gallen laboratory. Such systems can be widely used, especially to produce ceramic granulates. However, the production of plastic and metal powder composites will also be further researched with this system. The pilot spray drier now gives inspire the opportunity to carry out in-depth material developments in this area and build up further material expertise for additive manufacturing. Material quantities in the kg range can now be produced, which are specifically required for research on PBF-LB technologies. For more details approach Manfred Schmid (manfred.schmid@inspire.ch)

TNO at Holst Centre currently works with more than 40 parties (!) in the European SUSTRONICS Project. By combining eco-friendly electronics, increased productivity, and the development of cutting-edge functionalities, the project aims to propel the industry towards a more sustainable and prosperous future. With a strong focus on green technology and novel business opportunities, Sustronics seeks to make a lasting impact on the electronics landscape in Europe. In this project we will further elaborate on our expertise of sustainable printed electronics. This specifically means the development of printed electronics solutions and materials for more sustainable options of electronics products like lighting, smart wound dressing and personal care. Ecodesigns allowing efficient recycling of precious and environmentally less friendly materials is part of the system architecture enabled by new materials and processes. Professor and Head of the Hybrid Materials Laboratory | Complex Ceramic Architectures Additive Manufacturing
A new step towards the direct electrification of chemical processes! The picture shows a mock-up of of the reactor recently developed at the Hybrid Materials laboratory at SUPSI. We have 3D printed porous SiSiC-lattices to be used both as resistive heaters and as catalyst geometric supports in #heterogeneous #chemical #processes. These results are part of the CHyMeC project (financed by Innosuisse) coordinated by Riccardo Balzarotti. CHyMeC aims at increasing the sustainability of the production of #carbon and #hydrogen by #methane cracking. Moreover, we can now design, produce by #additivemanufacturing and tests complex porous #ceramic architectures for internal Joule heating in chemical reactors. #MEMTi #SUPSI
