During yesterday’s International Superyacht Society meeting, the focus was crew retention. The conversation revolved around the importance of training, leadership, mentoring and management, but one crucial element that remains under-recognized is the effectiveness of current training programs. While the training facilities claim they are preparing crew members to the best of their abilities, the reality is that much of this training falls short in adequately equipping them for the actual demands of life on a yacht. Take the Basic Safety training course as an example — what are they truly teaching? Are these programs aligning with the practical skills needed to thrive onboard? no they are purely giving them what the course name states “basic” safety training There needs to be more emphasis on real-world, hands-on training that mirrors the challenges crew face at sea. Institutions like Savvy Maritime Academy exemplify the type of practical education that goes beyond theory and genuinely prepares crew for the realities of working on yachts. Programs like these will be key to improving retention by ensuring crew are not only competent but confident in their roles from the outset. JMS Yachting
