In our latest issue, Deputy Governor Andrew Abir of the בנק ישראל Bank of Israel explores the promising role of #CBDC in promoting public-private competition and cooperation. In Israel, the development of a #digitalshekel is not just about keeping pace with global financial trends, but about leveling the playing field in the country’s highly concentrated market. By enabling smaller #fintechs and PSPs to compete with traditional banks, the digital shekel holds the transformative potential to boost competition and provide more choices for end users — while maintaining access to retail central bank money. These trends have led the Deutsche Bundesbank to initiate a future scenarios study examining three possible futures for cash and the cash cycle from the perspective of 2037. What steps is Kyrgyzstan taking to develop a digital currency? This month we share an exclusive update from Aigul Bakesarieva, Head of the Digital Som Project Group at the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic. 🇰🇬   Bakesarieva traces the milestones of Kyrgyzstan’s #CBDC journey so far, starting in 2022 with the adoption of the digital som concept, through vendor evaluation and amendments to the legislative framework, to the current day with imminent plans to test a prototype of the digital som. I don't give our editorial team of the Central Bank Payments News (CBPN), Brianna Erban and Jordan Taylor, credit often enough. The latest issue of CBPN is about to hit the virtual shelves, and it's yet again an invaluable source of information about developments in payments from Central Banks' views. What we don't mention often enough though is the additional value gained from being able to access the full back-catalogue of the publication, regardless when you started your subscription. I wanted to refresh my memory on the payments infrastructure in Kenya and couldn't have found a more succinct and relevant summary as in the 12 page feature we published earlier, with contributions from six different authors from the Central Bank of Kenya. Yes, it's behind a paywall, but that's for a good reason. The publication is advertising-free and carefully curated by our editorial team, which comes at a cost.
