Could geologic hydrogen extracted from the earth's subsurface be a black swan that completely disrupts the energy transition, making even the most fanciful uses of hydrogen, like cars and home heating, economical? Having received lots of questions about #geologic #hydrogen, my colleagues Musfika Mishi and Mark Daly spent the past few months researching the topic. Their results? 🧨 Don't expect any immediate disruption. We may have to wait until 2030 for (hopefully at least some of) the 17 projects under development today to start producing. 💲 Costs: Developers are aiming to deliver hydrogen at a cost slightly below that of natural gas-derived gray H2. The catch is that we haven't seen any detailed costs analyses backing these targets. Co-producing #helium, which sometimes occurs with hydrogen, could improve economics. 🚛 Transportation will be a major bottleneck. Discovering geologic H2 near #demand centers would be a big win for the industry. How is geologic hydrogen formed? How much has been found so far? Could pumping water into the subsurface stimulate production? What are the economics of Project Monzon being developed by Helios Aragon in Spain? Which governments are offering funding? Which companies are getting involved? What about the emissions intensity of geologic hydrogen? What are fairy circles and what do they have to do with geologic hydrogen? These and many more questions are answered in Musfika and Mark's report, titled Tech Radar: Geologic Hydrogen. BNEF users can click the link in the comments to see the report. European Hydrogen Week - Brussels (Belgium), 18-22 November 2024 The #hydrogen economy will redraw the energy map. There is absolutely no doubt that hydrogen will have a key role in the energy transition, especially to harvest the fast-growing amount of #renewable energy. Therefore, in the global race to reach the Paris Agreement targets, hydrogen technologies are increasingly at the centre of the attention and are now considered crucial and lucrative opportunities. The hydrogen’s moment is definitely now! That’s why more and more companies and investors are prioritising hydrogen. Yet, every business decision carries a risk and to mitigate them connections and knowledge-sharing are key. This event is a melting pot of powerful and influential leaders, policy makers, researchers, and end users each looking for the next big thing. Companies will find customers, investors and partners in the exhibition area as well as have be able to attend thought-provoking conferences. The African Hydrogen Partnership (AHP) (AHP | www.ahp.africa), the only continent-wide African non-profit umbrella association dedicated to the development of green and natural (geologic) hydrogen in #Africa, is thrilled to support the European Hydrogen Week. Nigeria: International Hydrogen Summit 2024 | Catalyzing Green Hydrogen Development in Nigeria - Capacity and Partnership Imperative. Thursday, 17 October 2024. Registration: https://lnkd.in/dkQgeSuc Many ideas, concepts and models which are feasible for the economies of the Global North might not necessarily work for the Global South. The electrification of many sub-sectors of the transportation sector of Africa using BEV is not possible without an electric grid. People in sub-Saharan Africa will need energy and transport. If there is no electric grid, people will develop decentralized solutions similar to the diesel generator market at the moment and hydrogen and its derivatives are likely to be a substantial part of the solution. Estimates indicate that #Nigeria has a total diesel generator capacity of at least 40 GW. To put this into perspective, the total electricity generation capacity of Norway is approximately 40 GW and Belgium has a capacity of roughly 30 GW. Although many processes associated with hydrogen are not energy efficient in comparison with other renewable technologies, constraints and restrictions will give hydrogen a greater importance in Nigeria and the Global South than in the Global North. The African Hydrogen Partnership (AHP) (AHP | www.ahp.africa), the only continent-wide African non-profit umbrella association dedicated to the development of green and natural (geologic) #hydrogen in #Africa, is delighted to support the International Hydrogen Summit 2024. Several AHP member and partner organizations, e.g. Afe Babalola University (#ABUAD), the EU-funded JUST-GREEN AFRH2ICA project and Tekinologi, greatly contributed to the prepration of the conference.
