It’s devastating to see how systemic poverty, corruption, and weak border protections are feeding the exploitation of vulnerable people seeking a better life. Migration shouldn’t be a life-or-death journey or a chance for syndicates to profit from desperation. It’s critical for governments, organizations, and communities alike to come together to tackle the corruption and trafficking that traps migrants in cycles of abuse. Inua Advocacy
Non-profit Organizations
Toward a world where no refugee is trapped in statelessness.
About us
Inua Advocacy is an independent civil society organisation that advocates for refugee rights in Malawi and beyond. Our vision is a world where no refugee is trapped in statelessness, and our mission is to ensure that all actors in refugee affairs are committed to promoting sustainable solutions that uphold human rights. Refugees in Malawi do not have the right to work, own property, move freely, integrate or/and become citizens. This applies also to those who were born here from 1994 onwards, when Dzaleka camp was established. Confined to living in the refugee camp indefinitely, they must survive on monthly support from the World Food Programme (WFP), which is currently the equivalent of $ 5 per month per person. We strive to see a healthy refugee policy developed and implemented in Malawi that focuses on self-reliance, participation and sustainability.

Inua Advocacy has joined fellow human rights defenders at the 81st Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (#ACPHR), currently taking place in Banjul. The session, which began on October 17 and runs until November 6, 2024, will focus on the human rights situation in Africa. This afternoon, Inua Advocacy will host a side event to discuss the impact of encampment policies on refugees, the intersection of politics and refugee management, and the challenges faced by those advocating for refugee rights among other things. #ACHPR81 #HumanRights #RefugeeRights #Malawi #Dzaleka

Inua Advocacy reposted this
The Commissioner for Refugees recently admitted the presence of firearms in Dzaleka Refugee Camp and the rising human trafficking activities that pose a threat to national security. He disclosed severe manpower shortages, with just one security officer and four guards managing a camp of approximately 56,000 refugees and asylum seekers, along with 15 police officers — far below the recommended ratio of 1 officer per 500 individuals. While the Commissioner’s acknowledgment of these challenges is a step in the right direction, recognition alone is insufficient. The traffickers continue to operate with minimal arrests or prosecutions despite being well-known and identifiable. Immediate action is required to dismantle trafficking networks and restore security in the camp. Inua Advocacy urges the Department for Refugees to prioritize the safety and dignity of refugees and to act decisively in holding traffickers accountable. Inua Advocacy is participating in a high-level dialogue on Malawi’s civic space, convened by #YouthandSociety (YAS), the #MalawiJudiciary, and the #AfricaJudgesandJuristsForum, whose membership includes both current and retired judges, among others. This gathering has brought together senior leaders from the Malawi Judiciary, the legislative and executive branches of the government, civil society organizations, the media, UN entities, the Malawi Law Society, as well as human rights defenders and legal experts. Delegates are discussing various threats and opportunities related to civic space. The conference is especially valuable for us, given the recent persecution we face from the Refugee Department, which recently issued a new ban prohibiting us from working with refugees and other organizations involved in refugee management at Dzaleka Camp. #YAS #humanrights #CivicSpace ##africajudgesandjuristsforum #inuaadvocacy

We have been featured in the news today following two conferences held in the southern region with religious leaders and senior journalists. During these events, we highlighted the challenges faced by refugees in the country, and urged religious leaders to continue preaching peace and fostering love for refugees within host communities. We also challenged the media to highlight refugee issues in their outlets to ensure that they live a happy and peaceful life and their rights are upheld. #refugeerights #humanrights #PeaceAndUnity #faithandhumanity #dzaleka

The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has praised the media in Malawi for its vital role in promoting refugee rights by shaping public perception, influencing policy, and amplifying the voices of refugees. The commission also called for continued efforts in this area. MHRC Regional Human Rights Coordinator Victor Khwima made these remarks when Inua Advocacy engaged senior journalists in Blantyre to discuss the media's critical role in raising awareness and advocating for refugees and asylum seekers in the country. This was the first of several such engagements planned for the year, with more sessions to be held in the Central and Northern regions. #humanrights #refugeerights #dzaleka
