Toward a world where no refugee is trapped in statelessness.

About us

Inua Advocacy is an independent civil society organisation that advocates for refugee rights in Malawi and beyond. Our vision is a world where no refugee is trapped in statelessness, and our mission is to ensure that all actors in refugee affairs are committed to promoting sustainable solutions that uphold human rights. Refugees in Malawi do not have the right to work, own property, move freely, integrate or/and become citizens. This applies also to those who were born here from 1994 onwards, when Dzaleka camp was established. Confined to living in the refugee camp indefinitely, they must survive on monthly support from the World Food Programme (WFP), which is currently the equivalent of $ 5 per month per person. We strive to see a healthy refugee policy developed and implemented in Malawi that focuses on self-reliance, participation and sustainability.

Inua Advocacy is participating in a high-level dialogue on Malawi’s civic space, convened by #YouthandSociety (YAS), the #MalawiJudiciary, and the #AfricaJudgesandJuristsForum, whose membership includes both current and retired judges, among others. This gathering has brought together senior leaders from the Malawi Judiciary, the legislative and executive branches of the government, civil society organizations, the media, UN entities, the Malawi Law Society, as well as human rights defenders and legal experts. Delegates are discussing various threats and opportunities related to civic space. The conference is especially valuable for us, given the recent persecution we face from the Refugee Department, which recently issued a new ban prohibiting us from working with refugees and other organizations involved in refugee management at Dzaleka Camp. #YAS #humanrights #CivicSpace ##africajudgesandjuristsforum #inuaadvocacy

We have been featured in the news today following two conferences held in the southern region with religious leaders and senior journalists. During these events, we highlighted the challenges faced by refugees in the country, and urged religious leaders to continue preaching peace and fostering love for refugees within host communities. We also challenged the media to highlight refugee issues in their outlets to ensure that they live a happy and peaceful life and their rights are upheld. #refugeerights #humanrights #PeaceAndUnity #faithandhumanity #dzaleka

The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has praised the media in Malawi for its vital role in promoting refugee rights by shaping public perception, influencing policy, and amplifying the voices of refugees. The commission also called for continued efforts in this area. MHRC Regional Human Rights Coordinator Victor Khwima made these remarks when Inua Advocacy engaged senior journalists in Blantyre to discuss the media's critical role in raising awareness and advocating for refugees and asylum seekers in the country. This was the first of several such engagements planned for the year, with more sessions to be held in the Central and Northern regions. #humanrights #refugeerights #dzaleka

In our ongoing efforts to raise awareness of refugee issues, we engaged senior media representatives today in a conference focused on addressing refugee concerns and fostering solutions through dialogue, collaboration, and information sharing. The conference is aimed to enhance media managers' understanding of Malawi's Refugee and Asylum Seeker Policy and Legal Framework. It will also encourage them to explore and report on the challenges faced by refugees and asylum seekers, as well as to highlight stories of inclusivity and tolerance. In a virtual presentation, Inua Advocacy CEO Innocent Magambi commended the media for their coverage of refugee issues at Dzaleka and expressed hope for continued partnership. #refugeerights #dzaleka #malawimedia #humanrights

Religious leaders from across the Southern Region have gathered at the Grace Bandawe Conference Centre in Blantyre for a conference organized by Inua Advocacy. The event, themed "United in Compassion: Highlighting the Faith-Based Response to Refugee Protection in Malawi," seeks to emphasize the role of faith communities in supporting refugee rights. In his keynote address, Dr. Enson Lwesya, Senior Pastor at the International Christian Assembly (#ICA), stressed the importance of recognizing and upholding the rights of refugees. He said, "Refugees have rights too, but often their rights are neglected because they are displaced. Their humanity remains intact; they do not become less than human simply because they have fled their homes." This conference is part of an ongoing effort to raise awareness among religious leaders about refugee issues, aiming to bolster support and protection for displaced populations. #faithinaction #refugeerights #standwithrefugees #refugeeprotection

Almost two weeks ago, the Malawi Defense Force (MDF) raided Dzaleka Refugee Camp to dismantle people smuggling gangs, resulting in over 200 arrests. This surprise operation targeted human trafficking syndicates, some of which remain active despite the crackdown. The camp, which is home to over 50,000 people, is a major hub for illegal migration routes to South Africa. This piece is worth reading for those interested in human trafficking issues in Malawi. Today, we unite globally to mark World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. This day highlights the urgent need to protect the vulnerable and hold perpetrators accountable. Human trafficking, a grave violation of human rights, exists in every corner of the world and strips people of their dignity and freedom. We call on governments to strengthen prevention measures, increase support for survivors, and end impunity. Let us raise awareness and foster a world where every person is safe from trafficking. #EndHumanTrafficking #HumanRights

WFP Increases Refugee Food Rations by 25% The World Food Programme (WFP) will increase its monthly cash transfers to refugees from 50 percent to 75 percent, starting in August 2024. This means that the monthly allocation of $5 (K8,755) per person per month will increase to $7.76 (K13,600) per person per month. While this may not fully meet all the refugees' needs, it will make a significant difference. This news is especially welcome as earlier this year there were concerns that the WFP might completely halt its support to refugees or significantly downsize and focus only on the most vulnerable due to funding challenges. #FoodSecurity #RefugeeSupport #WFP #HumanitarianAid #DzalekaRefugeeCamp #RefugeeRights #SupportRefugees #HumanRights
