This is a conversation Peter Cauwelier and I have been having for years! 😂 Culture is indeed a big word. I personally align with Joseph Shaules' definition: Culture is the "complex patterns of behaviors and meaning in our body, mind, and in the world." It's about who we are, how we perceive things, and what we do. How does this relate to teams? 🤝 For teams to work well, each member needs to understand how their cultural background influences their thinking and behavior. It’s equally important for team members to step into each other’s shoes and appreciate diverse perspectives. This deep understanding helps teams establish clear, tailored rules that align with their shared goals, fostering a culture of #psychologicalsafety where everyone feels heard and valued. How does this relate to corporate culture? 🏢 Teams operate within the broader context of an organization and geographical constraints. While corporate culture provides the overarching "rules of the game," as Joseph Shaules puts it, each team—and individual—may interpret and "localize" those rules differently. This localization of corporate culture is essential for teams to be effective in different geographical contexts, as they adapt the broader principles to align with local norms and realities. So, how do we adjust the game plan? 🎯 Culture is not static; it's a compass rather than a strict set of rules. Therefore, building a corporate culture that resonates with employees requires co-creation. It should emerge from a dialogue between leadership's direction and how teams and individuals interpret, adapt, and practice it, ensuring that it remains relevant across various regions. What steps do you take to ensure your corporate culture evolves and adapts to reflect the needs and aspirations of your teams across different locations? 🌍 #TeamCulture #Leadership #CorporateCulture #DiversityandInclusion #WorkplaceCulture #CulturalAwareness

A paragraph close to my heart ❤️ , from Dr. David Burkus "Best Team Ever" "If you were asked to describe your company's culture, odds are you would share much more about your team's culture than about the company as a whole." That is why Teams Eat Culture for Breakfast 😋 . Nothing wrong with looking at your corporate culture. But what really counts is what happens at the level of the different teams. And you might be surprised 😯 about how your 'corporate culture' shows up very differently in each of your teams. #teamwork  #teamlearning  #teamdevelopment  #psychologicalsafety  #highperformanceteams  #collaboration  #connections   #LetsCreateABetterWorldOneTeamAtATime

At Cultural Impact, we’re not just about the numbers—but last month has been incredibly rewarding! We’ve had the privilege of reaching over 250 executives across 4 different locations and 150 students with the help of facilitators of 4 different nationalities. It’s been truly stimulating to collaborate with people from various sectors—from trucking to plastic caps manufacturing—demonstrating the power of diverse perspectives in action. This month was also extra special, as it marked the first time our programs were delivered by our amazing colleagues in Europe and Singapore, since I couldn’t be in four places at once. Special shout out to Kristi Swenson Alcouffe I.C.F.- P.C.C. Claire Ong, MAPP Dhivagari Gopala Krishanan Benjamin Solomon - Professional Certified Coach and @ DR PHILIP MERRY Team Synchronicity. Their dedication ensured that Team Psychological Safety, Exchange Theatre, Action Learning, and the Cultural Impact Scan continued to foster real transformation in every corner. We’re excited about the future and the continued journey towards creating more inclusive, psychologically safe, and high-performing teams! #CulturalImpact #TeamPsychologicalSafety #ExchangeTheatre #ActionLearning #DiverseTeams #LeadershipDevelopment

At Cultural Impact, we love seeing educators explore new ways to foster critical thinking, cultural awareness, and global citizenship through AI. This type of hands-on, reflective learning prepares students for the complexities of our interconnected world. Andrew Osborne’s assignment encourages students to use AI not just for problem-solving but also for critical thinking and understanding cultural dynamics. It’s exactly the kind of forward-thinking approach we need to embrace as educators—learning to use these tools ethically and responsibly in the real world. Kudos! This is also what we are aiming to do with the CIS Connect Chatbot (developed with the guidance of Mustapha BenKalfate), helping users explore cultural dimensions through AI-driven insights. Looking forward to seeing how this experiment unfolds! #crosscultural #continouslearning #ai

I’m always looking for new ways to engage students, and this semester, I’m trying something different: an assignment that combines intercultural communication with AI tools to foster critical thinking skills and global citizenship. It’s a bit of an experiment, but I’m excited to see how it unfolds. The results will come in December. My students will collaborate in groups to design an intercultural communication learning activity, using AI tools like ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot (or others) to assist with brainstorming, content creation, and problem-solving in class. The goal is to explore cultural differences and critically challenge the outputs of AI producing cultural content while gaining skills in leveraging technology to create a dynamic, interactive learning experience. In terms of learning objectives, I hope to promote global citizenship by fostering empathy, ethical and critical thinking, and cultural (self-)awareness. I also hope that using AI to generate innovative ideas for intercultural learning activities—while exploring real-world communication challenges in a global context—stimulates thinking about how students can envision using AI ethically and critically beyond the academic space. Furthermore, I want them to reflect on how AI shapes our understanding of intercultural communication, asking: Does it enhance our learning or present new challenges? This assignment is an opportunity for both me and my students to experiment with AI in a meaningful way. We’ll be navigating uncharted territory together, focusing on collaborative learning and ethical reflections. It’s not about getting everything perfect, but about exploring how AI can help us become better global citizens, cultural learners, and intercultural communicators. The workshops I've attended led by Dr. Stephan Ruppert have inspired me to try this pedagogical approach. Please check out the opportunities to learn about AI and intercultural communication from Stephan. #AICOSMO

Universalism: Is It Really One-Size-Fits-All? Our latest article explores the intriguing debate between universalism and particularism. Universalism promotes the idea of applying the same values and rules globally, suggesting a one-size-fits-all approach to concepts like respect and fairness. However, this ideal often overlooks the complex cultural, historical, and social contexts that shape how these values are expressed and understood. 🔍 Key Insights: 1. Cultural Nuances: Universal principles like respect can vary significantly across different cultures. What is considered respectful in one culture might not be viewed the same way in another. 2. Historical Context: The concept of universalism, championed by the Enlightenment and exemplified in France’s commitment to equal citizenship, faces criticism for failing to address historical injustices and ongoing social inequalities. 3. Particularism vs. Universalism: While universalism advocates for consistency, particularism emphasizes the importance of context and relationships. The article highlights how balancing these perspectives can lead to more empathetic and inclusive approaches. As our world becomes increasingly interconnected, understanding and navigating these cultural differences is crucial for fostering genuine inclusivity and harmony. Adapting universal principles to fit diverse contexts can help build more just and equitable societies. #Universalism #CulturalDiversity #Inclusivity #GlobalInsights #Particularism #CulturalUnderstanding

Recently, Cultural Impact was given the opprtunity of conducting an induction program for Dutch interns from the Malaysian Dutch Business Council (MDBC), guiding them on how to adapt to working life in Malaysia. It was an insightful session where we delved into understanding cultural differences, navigating new workplace norms, and learning the importance of building respectful relationships in a multicultural environment. When working in a different country, equipping yourself with cultural knowledge isn’t just a “nice-to-have”—it’s essential. Understanding the local culture, communication styles, and work ethics can enhance collaboration, minimise misunderstandings, and ultimately lead to a more rewarding and successful experience. For anyone stepping into a new cultural context, remember: embracing diversity opens doors to personal and professional growth! #CulturalAwareness #InterculturalCompetence #DiversityAndInclusion #MDBC

At Ideas International , continuous learning is at the heart of what we do. Recently, we held a transformative Cultural Impact workshop that not only deepened our cultural awareness but also recharged our entire teaching staff with fresh perspectives. Special thanks to Dhivagari Gopala Krishanan, who facilitated the workshop with impressive skill and energy, making it hard to believe it was her first time leading such a session. Her passion truly inspired us all! A huge shoutout as well to our Action Learning Coaches—Jia Yiing Chung, Dida Khairullah, and Dr. Romzee - whose expertise and guidance were instrumental throughout the process. Action learning is central to our approach because it empowers educators to engage in real-time problem-solving and collaborative reflection. Even though our teachers were on a break, they returned with renewed energy and fresh perspectives. The entire team was invigorated, tackling challenges with a mindset open to innovation and growth. Why Action Learning Matters in Education? Action learning equips teachers with critical skills, allowing them to face real-world challenges head-on. By using reflective dialogue and collaborative teamwork, they learn to think critically, adapt quickly, and find creative solutions that positively impact their students. It ensures that our educators are always learning by doing, which directly enhances their teaching practices. This method is particularly crucial in today's dynamic educational environment. It not only promotes personal development but fosters a culture of continuous improvement where teachers and students alike thrive in a positive, solutions-driven atmosphere. At Ideas International, we believe that through action learning and cultural intelligence, we are shaping a more empathetic, inclusive, and innovative educational environment—ensuring #EducationforAll.
