Collaboration. How do you know who to partner with if you don’t know who has what, and how to get into it?
Technology licensing is the key. It allows others to use, modify, or sell technology under agreed terms. Why is this crucial in today’s world?
#Licensing accelerates #innovation by spreading ideas and breaking down barriers. It drives economic growth by unlocking new revenue streams and fostering collaboration between startups and established corporations.
Last Friday was deeply exciting.
First, there was a game-changing panel on "Driving Revenue: Technology Licensing as a Path to IP Commercialisation (Malaysia Focus)" with industry heavyweights:
🛡 Dato Indera Ir Dr Ahmad Sabirin Arshad, President, SIRIM Berhad
🛡 Dato Seri Wong Siew Hai, President, Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association #MSIA
🛡 Wilson Tan, AutomationSG and CEO of Linkwise Technology
🛡 Patricia Chung, President IIPCC-MY and Managing Partner, Chung Chambers
We explored:
💡 Streamlining IP processes using AI technologies like natural language processing #NLP. generative AI and applied #AI, and upskilling talent to value-added tasks.
💡 How automation improves efficiency and drives tech licensing forward. And how sustainability indicators are integral to these processes.
💡 Best practices and innovative strategies for managing technology licenses with real-world examples like ARM Holdings' strategic licensing, Microsoft’s tiered SaaS models, Samsung's and IBM's cross-licensing.
💡 Focused IP portfolios and open innovation strategies, like Dupont selling less critical licenses and Tesla’s patent pledge.
💡 Standardisation is essential for enhancing IP value and marketability, creating a consistent framework that drives global adoption and trust.
💡 Navigating barriers like lengthy filing processes, financing issues, and inadequate IP protection. Celebrating failures and learning from them is critical for growth.
💡 Collaborative opportunities for Malaysia to develop technology in collaboration with other countries like the UK, opening new markets, reducing time and effort and lowering risks. We also set the stage for an upcoming Singapore-Malaysia collaboration, with IP grants and a strategic direction, presenting exciting opportunities.
Then, there was the closed-door roundtable table discussion, a high-level strategic discussion we started 2 years ago. It's been a slow and steady journey, but the taskforce is finally set up. With SIRIM ready to offer solutions to help SMEs with development of IP, input from Singapore, expert guidance from Korea, and strong local industry players in high tech high value sectors, we've got a game plan in place and the journey continues.
Good things take time, but it's well worth the effort. Together, we are driving sustainable innovation by ensuring that our technology advancements not only meet current needs but also protect and nurture our future.
