John Ooi Chong Sen transforms Malaysia’s packaging industry by turning hard-to-recycle paper liner waste into valuable materials.
His experience in the label packaging industry sparked his entrepreneurial spirit. Witnessing the daily generation of tons of paper liner residue, most of which ended up in landfills, John recognized the urgent need for a solution. This realization led him to found Materials In Works (MIW) to combat this waste crisis.

🌍 Honored to be a part of the Singapore FinTech Festival 2024! 🌍
Materials In Works on stage at this year’s Singapore FinTech Festival to discuss sustainable impact in the session, "Bridging the Gap: Collaborations for Sustainable Impact" - Powered by UOB.
This incredible platform allowed us to share our journey through the UOB FinLab’s GreenTech Accelerator and highlight some of the most impactful partnerships we’ve established, including those with UNIQLO Malaysia for waste management and ResourceCo for transforming waste into Processed Engineered Fuel (PEF). These partnerships don’t just address critical waste challenges — we demonstrate the scalability of our upcycling solutions across larger operations, setting a replicable model for other industries.
Regional Connectivity was a major theme we discussed. With mentors from Malaysia and Singapore, we gained crucial insights into regulatory landscapes and cultural nuances that shape successful collaborations. By tailoring our solutions to regional market conditions, we’re paving the way for smoother market entry across Southeast Asia.
In terms of Measuring Success, we emphasized the importance of metrics—carbon reduction, waste diverted from landfills, and cost savings for our partners. Scaling our solutions requires a sustainable business model and a commitment to continuous feedback from stakeholders, ensuring that every partnership delivers lasting impact.
A word of advice to fellow Greentechs: “Focus on building trust and aligning your solutions with your partner’s sustainability goals. This foundation opens doors for meaningful collaborations and long-term scalability.”
Thank you to everyone Marianne Tan, Carolin Barr K., Emmanual Tay, warodom khamphanchai, PhD, who joined us on stage, and special thanks to UOB FinLab for powering this impactful session. Let’s keep driving sustainable innovation together!

🌍 Exciting News from Nuplas Solutions! 🌿
We've just signed an MOU with Materials In Works (MIW) to launch a zero-waste initiative for paper liners. Together, we're transforming waste paper liners into valuable cellulose pulp, benefiting the environment and meeting local paper manufacturers' raw material needs.
This partnership offers an innovative upcycling solution that turns traditionally non-recyclable paper labeling liners, destined for landfills, into valuable raw materials. Our efforts could prevent waste from reaching landfills, save up to 54,600 trees from being cut down, and offset nearly 11,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually. 🌳🌱
