Everything that has a beginning must have an end. The final day of EduPalm 2024 took place earlier today, 28 July. The almost 80 participants; Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and IChemE Malaysia students, their lecturers, as well as REGENERASI ambassadors departed Carey Island in the spirit of camaraderie and with a zeal to play the role of unofficial ambassadors of sustainable and healthy #MalaysianPalmOil. But before leaving EcoGardens, the winners of yesterday's Palm Oil Adventure Race and the TikTok Video Production Contest were awarded their prizes by MPOC's Sustainability, Promotion, and Communication Department General Manager Mr. Firdaus Tarmizi, sustainability researcher and educator Prof. Hon Loong Lam, as well as UPM's nutrition researcher Dr. Nurul Shazini Ramli. Our deepest gratitude to all participants, volunteers, and MPOC staff members who have taken the time to make #EduPalm 2024 a success this weekend. Doin' some mornin' learnin'! Day 2 of EduPalm 2024 began earlier today with nearly 80 participants visiting the Palm Oil Experience Centre (POEC), Carey Island for a hands-on briefing on palm oil harvesting and milling. SD Guthrie Berhad officials shared insights on their operations, both domestically and abroad, highlighting the many uses of sustainable #MalaysianPalmOil. The morning's highlight was a live demonstration of oil palm fruit bunch harvesting and a lesson on determining their ripeness. Participants also got a chance to get up close and personal with the barn owl, used for natural rodent control on the plantation. Comment if you want your uni/college to be included in future #EduPalm events!

  • "Palm oil most prepared for EUDR" KEY TAKEAWAYS: 1) Palm Oil Sector's Readiness: The #palmoil sector is notably the most prepared for the European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), largely due to its extensive work on traceability and supplier assessments over the years. This preparation stems from the sector's efforts to address its reputation for deforestation and environmental damage. 2) Potential Unintended Consequences: A significant concern is that #EUDR might inadvertently exclude smallholder farmers from the supply chain. Operators may opt for less risky suppliers and more straightforward supply chains to comply with the regulation, potentially leading to continued deforestation by smallholders who are left out. 3) Sector Comparisons: Among the commodities impacted by EUDR, palm oil is the most prepared, while other sectors like wood, rubber, and beef are not explicitly detailed in terms of their readiness. The varying levels of preparedness across different sectors highlight the challenges and complexities of meeting the EUDR requirements within the tight deadline. Read full report in the comments.
