𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝘆: 𝗔 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗶𝗱𝗲 🎢🏆 It's been 3 weeks since my blackout on stage during the Demo Day pitch for my team's startup idea. After coming out of that haze (assignments and exams partially to blame), I wanted to take this opportunity to reflect on my journey through Startup Foundry. Startup Foundry is a subject where you learn the A-Z of building a startup, and the endgame is to pitch to investors for (imaginary) investment funds. My team proposed an AI travel assistant, Wanderlust—a mobile app that generates customized travel itineraries for both group and individual travel plans using AI. (And to clarify, no, we're not using OpenAI's API. We developed a three-part hybrid Machine Learning algorithm that offers greater accuracy and customization than what a general LLM can provide.) Working on Wanderlust with my team has been a memorable journey. It was filled with ups and downs that challenged us mentally, emotionally and even physically at times. Our group dynamics were intense—both in good and challenging ways. There were times when we worked seamlessly together, but there were also times when conflict was so significant that it hindered our progress. Despite the challenges, we tried our best to make things work. Communication was crucial during our toughest moments, and when that wasn't enough, having each other's back through some of our most gruelling situations brought us closer together. I am truly grateful to have shared this experience with my teammates, Liaw Xin Yee, Belle Han and Wei Hao Mo. I would also like to thank our brilliant mentor Hui Yan Y. for her continuous support and guidance throughout the development of Wanderlust. With our IT and Finance backgrounds, we knew we needed someone with a seasoned business perspective to "complete" our team. Hui Yan filled that role perfectly, and with her mentorship combined with our hard work, we emerged as the top team in our track for Demo Day 🥳 Finally, I would like to extend my gratitude to the Sunway iLabs team and Sian Lun Lau for being our informal mentors and providing invaluable insights that shaped Wanderlust into what it is today. I also appreciate the effort put into creating such a unique startup experience packed into a 14-week elective. This was hands-down the best subject I have taken in my 2 years at university.
