The Directorate General of Technical Airworthiness (DGTA) recently held the Malaysian State Technical Airworthiness (MSTA) Conference at the Raia Hotel & Convention Centre in Alor Setar, Kedah, on 14th - 17th October 2024. The first day featured presentations on key topics, including "Aviation Defense in Malaysia: Aligning Industry Roles with National Defense Policy Goals," "MSTAM: New State Airworthiness Regulations in Malaysia," and "The Role of CAAM in Elevating the Malaysian Aviation Industry." On the second day, speakers explored additional subjects such as "Machine Learning for Turbine Engine Condition Monitoring," "The Critical Role of UAS Jamming Technology in Ensuring Airspace Security," and "SIRIM’s Role in Empowering the Malaysian Defence Aviation Industry." I had the honour on Tuesday to meet YAB Dato’ Seri, Anwar Ibrahim Malaysian Prime Minister in Putrajaya, accompanied by senior Thales management Guy BONASSI, Nicolas Bouverot and François-Xavier Boutes. Our engagement centred on Thales’ over four decades of presence in Malaysia and its ongoing commitment to further the development of the defence, aerospace and security sectors, while investing in emerging technologies like AI. Also joining us was Tan Sri (Dr) Syed Azman Bin Syed Ibrahim, Founder and Managing Director of Weststar Aviation Group. Thales and Weststar have long cooperated on topics critical to Malaysia’s national ambitions, including air defence, air surveillance and security, with a view to supporting the country’s vision for sovereignty and autonomy. In a separate visit, I was also warmly hosted by YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled bin Nordin, the Malaysian Minister of Defence in a courtesy call, where the discussions further reinforced Thales’ commitment to supporting the local defence sector and fostering collaboration through technology transfer and the Industry Collaboration Program (ICP). On October 5, 2024, Weststar Aviation Services’ Kerteh Base proudly joined the CSR Mega Beach Cleaning 2.0, organized by Jadestone Energy Malaysia at Pantai Rumah Murah Kemasik.
