Yesterday at Sime Darby Industrial Academy, YSD THRIVE TVET Day brought together scholars from the YSD Skill Enrichment Programme with speakers from key industry partners. Ts Dr Madhavan Nair from Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad (TalentCorp) provided insights on employability and their MyNext initiative, while Ts Abdul Hafiz Mohama Nor shared inspiring stories from the Malaysia Board of Technologists. The day ended with the "Art of War" activity, emphasising the value of strategic thinking and teamwork in both workplace and learning institutions.   Since 2017, we have empowered nearly 1,600 scholars through key partnerships and important support from Sime Darby Berhad, SD Guthrie Berhad, and Sime Darby Property Berhad. Our YSD THRIVE - Rising Talent programme aims to equip our TVET and bursary scholars with essential skills for the future. Thank you to our partners, speakers, and training providers for making this year's event another success as we continue to elevate TVET and prepare our scholars to bring the industries forward. 

The SD Games 2024 carried on with an exciting inter-company Volleyball Tournament held in Sepang on 20 and 21 July 2024, bringing together 26 teams from SD Guthrie Berhad, Sime Darby Property and Sime Darby Berhad. This year also marked UMW Holding's first participation in the games following their integration into Sime Darby Berhad. In the Men's category, SD Guthrie Berhad teams dominated the competition. The Black Mamba VC clinched the championship title, while Southern Jets and Southern Giant earned second and third places, respectively while Negotiator completed the top four lineup. The Women's category featured intense battles, with SDI Spike Star from Sime Darby Berhad taking the championship. Unique VC and Southern Tornado 3.0, both from SD Guthrie Berhad, secured second and third places, respectively while UMW Angels, representing Sime Darby Berhad, finished fourth. Congratulations to all the victorious teams! We hope that the energy and enthusiasm from this tournament propel us forward as we prepare for the upcoming events in this exciting series!

Recently, #TeamYSD visited Kelantan to expand our community health and educational support across the state. Hosted by Yayasan Orang Kurang Upaya Kelantan (YOKUK) and their Chairperson and Executive Director, Datin Suliana Shamsuddin Alias, we were continually inspired by the community services we witnessed firsthand. Since 2014, our collaboration has empowered over 1,200 underprivileged individuals in Kelantan, with a commitment of RM3.29 million. In our discussion with Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat Malaysia Kelantan, our primary focus was on enhancing our understanding of flood disaster preparedness and management to better tailor our future disaster relief strategies. We also explored the challenges of teenage pregnancy, aiming to provide support in the future. Additionally, our engagement with vocational colleges there was an informative step towards enhancing TVET education, as we seek to expand our efforts and further improve well-being across Kelantan. #YSDImpact

Yesterday, YSD in collaboration with SD Guthrie Berhad Tawau, provided essential school facilities and equipment to SK Abaka in Tawau, Sabah following the devastating fire on 23 June 2024, that destroyed a building block housing the grade 4, 5 and 6 classrooms. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the SD Guthrie volunteers for their exemplary leadership, swift action, and dedication to supporting the students affected by the fire. We hope this initiative will ease the students’ learning process during this challenging time.

YSD is proud to share one of the insightful podcasts by Mr. Chrishen Robert Gomez, a YSD Environment Scholarship and Merdeka Award Grant recipient. Currently pursuing a PhD in Zoology at Oxford University, Chrishen focuses on developing a genetic-based model to conserve the Sunda Clouded Leopard in Sabah. In this engaging podcast, Chrishen delves into the critical role of biodiversity conservation, highlighting the Sunda Clouded Leopard as a keystone species in Southeast Asia. Chrishen discusses the species' habitat, behaviour, and the conservation challenges it faces, emphasising the importance of his research in developing sustainable conservation strategies. In our efforts to mitigate climate change while providing food to the needy, under the Eco-Citizen: Seeds of Change programme, YSD and SD Guthrie Berhad employee volunteers collaborated with The Lost Food Project (TLFP) to rescue surplus nutritious food, preventing the vegetables and fruits from ending up in landfills and causing greenhouse gas emissions; while ensuring that the food reaches underprivileged families to ease their daily burden so that they may have more to spend more on education and health. Since October 2021, YSD's support has enabled TLFP to rescue more than 3.4 million kg of surplus food, preventing the emission of over 8.5 million kg of greenhouse gases caused by food waste. We are proud of the dedication shown by over 80 SD Guthrie volunteers from various divisions from all over the world (Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Thailand, South Africa, United Kingdom and Netherlands) who worked tirelessly alongside our valued project partner. This initiative highlights our commitment to reducing food waste and contributing to a more resilient future.

This year, YSD hosted a special celebration for World Environment Day 2024 at the SD Guthrie Auditorium, uniting a diverse array of stakeholders, committed to environmental conservation. Among the distinguished attendees were Y.A.M. Tunku Tan Sri Imran Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar, Chairman of YSD; Dato’ Jeffri Salim Davidson, Group CEO of Sime Darby Berhad and YSD Governing Council Member; and Puan Sri Normah Hashim, YSD Governing Council Member; senior management and employees from SD Guthrie Berhad, Sime Darby Berhad, and Sime Darby Property Berhad; along with representatives from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, state government agencies, and YSD’s esteemed project and corporate partners. The event, held under the theme ‘Our Land, Our Future’, showcased YSD’s unwavering commitment to driving environmental conservation through the strength of partnership and important community engagement. Central to the event was the exclusive screening of the ‘YSD WildRoots’ docuseries, spotlighting ongoing efforts in environmental protection and fostering collaboration among all participants. The event concluded with a panel discussion exploring strategic conservation approaches at national and state government levels, in collaboration with corporates and NGOs; as well as a session dedicated to hornbill protection within the CFS landscape. The central message is that we all must stand together united in protecting our precious natural heritage together, for our children and their children’s future.

In celebration of this year's Hari Gawai, our collaboration with Sime Darby Rent-A-Car (SDRAC) brought much-needed support to 65 families comprising of 260 individuals altogether; in Kg. Siol Kandis, Petra Jaya, Kuching, Sarawak. Thanks to the hard work of our YSD Huluran Kasih employee volunteers from SDRAC, we successfully handed out dry food packs and grocery vouchers, bringing joy to while easing the burden for these underprivileged families. We hope that this initiative made a meaningful difference and brightened their celebrations.
