Governor Johannes !Gawaxab has been actively championing Namibia’s monetary voice on the global financial stage during the 2024 Annual International Monetary Fund (IMF) and The World Bank Meetings in Washington, DC. These meetings, attended by central bank governors and finance ministers from around the world, focuses on key global economic issues such as inclusive growth, inflation, climate-related risks, rising debt levels and the evolving role of multilateral financial institutions in the rapidly changing global landscape. Yesterday, on the margins of the 2024 Annual IMF-World Bank Group Meetings, Governor !Gawaxab met with Governor Shaktikanta Das of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to discuss the future of an inclusive financial system. Their discussions centred on Namibia’s rollout of the Fast Payment System and India's upcoming 90th RBI Anniversary, which will take place from 21 - 22 November 2024. This dialogue highlights the evolution of modern payment ecosystems in fostering access and economic opportunity for all, particularly for rural and informal economies. The RBI reaffirmed its support for the Bank of Namibia in creating a future-ready payment landscape, which will reduce the costs of both domestic and cross-border payments. In addition to these bilateral discussions, Governor Gawaxab also chaired the Group 1 Panel and Constituency Meetings at the IMF, reinforcing his leadership role in shaping regional and global financial discussions.

Beware of Fraudulent Investment Schemes! The Bank of Namibia has noted a rise in scams falsely promising financial support for Namibia's development, often targeting government officials, traditional leaders, and even church elders to exploit their influence. These criminals offer fake investments, using forged SWIFT transfers, money orders, and fraudulent documents to deceive individuals. Fraudsters pressure victims by claiming local banks are withholding non-existent funds and misrepresent the Bank of Namibia’s role to gain trust. Be vigilant!
