  • AUST team at AUSTInspire Business Incubation Centre wins WPI Pandemic Innovation Challenge 2024 We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the incubatees at AUSTInspire Business Incubation Centre, specifically the Smart Portable Ventilator team, on their remarkable victory in the WPI Pandemic Innovation Challenge. The event, held on Friday, April 19, 2024, and organized by the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, MA, USA, witnessed the outstanding performance of our team amidst stiff competition. Comprising Jibril Mohammed and Chinedu Chino under the supervision of AUSTInspire hub manager, Dr. Vitalis Anye, alongside the invaluable contributions of Dr. Abdulhakeem Bello, Dr. Odette Anye, and Dr. Lemch Wala (MD), the team emerged triumphant over 10 universities from across Africa, securing the prestigious first place. Their success was no small feat, impressively presenting their innovative project to esteemed judges from WPI, including Prof. John Obayemi from the Biomedical Engineering department, and Dr. Bright Ohene, a Surgeon Doctor from Harvard Medical School. The coordination by Peter Abosede, a Research Assistant at the Pandemic Engineering AIM-Lab at WPI, added to the rigor of the competition. The team's ingenious creation—a smart monitoring system customized for portable ventilators—captivated attention. Their mobile application facilitates real-time data collection from ventilators, integrating vital signs like heart rate, blood oxygen levels, and respiration rate. With incorporated teleconferencing features, physicians can remotely monitor and communicate with patients using their smartphones, significantly reducing direct contact and mitigating the spread of infectious diseases like COVID-19. As a token of appreciation for their groundbreaking work, the team will receive N700,000/$500, which will be allocated towards further development of the application and other ventilator components. This achievement underscores AUST's unwavering dedication to fostering a vibrant research and innovation ecosystem to tackle the diverse challenges confronting Nigeria and the broader African continent. Special commendation is due to their mentors and fellow team members—Dr. Vitalis Anye, Dr. Odette Anye, Dr. Abdulhakeem Bello, and Dr. Lemchi Wala (MD)—whose guidance played an instrumental role in this success. Once again, congratulations to Jibril Mohammed, Chinedu Chino, and the entire Smart Portable Ventilator team at AUST for this well-deserved recognition.
