Visibility matters. It’s not just about growing or learning, it’s about showing your journey to the world. So, here’s a glimpse into mine from the past 3 months. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about my career and life goals recently. As someone who’s involved in many things, I’ve often felt like I didn’t have a clear direction. It wasn’t until my mentorship session with Tyna Adediran at the CAWSTEM event that I realized my career actually has a progression. Before that, I felt lost, like I was floating without a purpose. You can see on my LinkedIn profile that I’m a marketing girl, a product management enthusiast, a research analyst, and more. I’m also an electrical engineering graduate, and sometimes I’m not sure how everything fits together. But in the last quarter, things started becoming clearer. I wanted to brush up on my technical skills, so I learned React with Africa Agility Foundation and worked on a project called Trakmama. I also started a Competitive Intelligence externship with Extern for Expedia Group and volunteered on the media and communications team for CAWSTEM 1.0. At the same time, I left a job because my contract expired, and the renewal terms didn’t feel right to me. I became top-rated on Upwork and received four job offers but I turned them down because they didn’t align with where I am in my career journey right now. I even turned down an offer to mentor students in product management with Africa Agility, because I hadn’t worked in product since February, and I didn’t feel like I was in the right place to guide others when I was still figuring out my own path. I’ll be honest, I questioned myself a lot. Am I making the right choices? Am I doing the right thing by turning down jobs that others would love to have? I didn’t get the one job I was really looking forward to, and that made me ask even more questions. But I’ve realized that these are my choices, and for the first time in my life, I feel clear-headed about them. I’m not going to be swayed by what others are doing or what’s expected. I’ve also been fortunate to be part of some amazing communities. I got into the Big Dreams Different Mediums Collective, created by Tutu Adetunmbi. It’s a space where multipassionate women like me can thrive, and I don’t feel out of place anymore. I was also selected for the Femme Forward Circle Nigeria Program, which I’m super excited about because I get to connect with fellow women while working towards my personal and career milestones. It may seem like I’m all over the place, and I used to think so too, but I’ve come to understand that I’m just a multipassionate individual. I don’t fit into one box, and that’s okay. All these lessons and experiences are going to come together and shape my career over time. This was my last quarter in a nutshell, and I’ll be doing more posts like this because visibility is key. It’s not just about making progress, it’s about letting people see it. And that’s exactly what I’m here to do.
