  • Here is another eco-innovative idea on how to deal with textile wastes.

🚮👕🔥 In Austria alone, around 220,000 tonnes of textile waste are produced every year, of which almost 80 per cent is incinerated. As a result, valuable raw materials are irretrievably lost. A team led by Thomas Harter from the Institute of Bioproducts and Paper Technology has come up with a sustainable solution to this problem. The researchers have developed a process to recover the fibres from cotton-based used textiles and use them to produce paper for packaging materials. 📦

Turning Avocado Waste into Eco-Friendly Bioplastic A Mexican company has innovated a process to convert inedible avocado pits into bioplastic. This eco-friendly alternative breaks down faster than conventional plastics and uses fewer fossil fuels in production. With Americans consuming over 6 billion avocados annually, this solution helps address environmental waste and supports sustainability by repurposing avocado byproducts into a biodegradable material. Any thoughts? #Sustainability #Bioplastic #EcoFriendly #AvocadoWaste #GreenInnovation #Biodegradable Source: Scott Munguia BIOFASE

Upcycling banana waste 🗑️ 🍌 stems as green cotton alternative? Bananas are a wasteful crop. For 1 ton of fruit, 2 tons of debris are left. Normally this is burned. TexFad, a pioneering Ugandan company, is leading the way in circular innovation by transforming banana waste into sustainable textile products. A great approach - why? 1️⃣ Upcycling agricultural waste: Texfad utilizes the abundant banana waste in Uganda, converting discarded banana stems into high-quality fibers for textiles. This process not only reduces waste but also creates value from a previously underutilized resource. 2️⃣ Eco-Friendly production: The manufacturing process is environmentally friendly, using natural fibers and minimizing water and energy consumption. Their products, including carpets, bags, and hair extensions, are biodegradable and contribute to a sustainable lifestyle. 3️⃣ Economic Empowerment: By collaborating with smallholder banana farmers, local communities are empowered. The company has trained over 400 youth and retained 27 workers, promoting skill development and job creation. • The ISO—International Organization for Standardization—recently published ISO 59004, part of the ISO 59000 family of standards.  ISO 59004 is a crucial part of the ISO 59000 family of standards, specifically designed to foster a shift towards a circular economy. What is ISO 59004?   - ISO 59004 is a comprehensive standard that provides guidance applicable to any organization. It focuses on promoting a circular economy, which emphasizes sustainable resource management and the renewal of natural resources.   - The standard covers the following aspects:    - Terminology and Concepts: It defines key terms and concepts related to circular economy practices.    - Vision for Circular Economy: ISO 59004 outlines a vision for transitioning to a circular economy.    - Core Principles: It elucidates core principles organizations should adopt to facilitate sustainability.    - Practical Guidance: The standard offers practical advice for implementing circular economy practices.    - By adhering to ISO 59004, organizations can:    - Deliver more sustainable and ambitious solutions.    - Improve relationships with stakeholders.    - Fulfill voluntary and legal obligations more effectively and efficiently.    - Contribute to climate change mitigation.    - Increase resilience against resource scarcity and other environmental, social, and economic risks.   - Ultimately, ISO 59004 supports organizations in contributing to the United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development Why is ISO 59004 important?   - The linear model of the global economy (extraction, production, use, and disposal) has led to significant environmental challenges, including resource depletion, climate change, and biodiversity loss.   - ISO 59004 advocates for a circular economy model, which aims to address these issues by emphasizing sustainable resource management and circular resource use.   - Organizations that adopt ISO 59004 can create more value within society while ensuring the quality and resilience of ecosystems, ultimately supporting a sustainable future.
