How can South Africa protect its oceans while preserving the livelihoods of coastal communities? Here Bradley M. shares his perspectives He writes... Oceans are essential for life on Earth. They regulate our climate, produce oxygen, and support vast ecosystems. For South Africa, the ocean provides a critical economic lifeline, supporting the fisheries industry worth R6 billion and employing more than 27,000 people. However, unsustainable fishing practices are pushing marine ecosystems to the brink of collapse. Overfishing, compounded by climate change and pollution, has resulted in the rapid depletion of key fish stocks. This presents a challenging question—how do we protect the environment without devastating the livelihoods of coastal communities that depend on fishing? In light of this, we will explore overfishing’s impact on South Africa’s marine ecosystems, examine current conservation efforts, and discuss potential solutions that consider both ecological and socioeconomic factors. Can the race to renewables reshape global power and save our planet from a fossil-fueled future? Here Billy Poon shares interesting insights. He writes... Now, let's talk about different renewable energies. There are many, including wind power, solar energy, and geothermal electricity sources, from which all kinds of environmentally friendly power are derived. But nowadays, everybody has these two in mind: wind and solar. Never before has any country or group been so much beyond the pale of international fairness and justice; never have such obvious pipes led to so much talkativeness and reaction between righteousness and selfishness, so contributed nowhere more than in US-PRC relations. With the spotlight currently on renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydropower, these new-style power solutions are considered the lifeblood of a race against time, and they are gradually excluding old-style coal, oil, and gas to fill that gap. Droughts in the prairies are just one of many important effects of climate change that Canada will undoubtedly experience. High latitude nations like Canada are anticipated to be most affected by global warming, including an increase in the frequency and severity of extreme weather events. This means that natural disasters like storms, forest fires, heat waves, floods, and droughts will likely occur more frequently in Canada, putting people's resilience to the test and making it harder for them to adjust to the country's changing climate. Despite the normal variability of the climate, recent alterations are exceptional and do indicate that something other than nature is at play. Lately, I've been reflecting on the challenges facing South Africa’s mining industry. It’s a sector that's always been close to my heart, but it’s hard to ignore the tough times it’s been going through. From fluctuating commodity prices to the rising demands for environmental responsibility, things are definitely changing. Mining has been a cornerstone of our economy, but the negative impact on the environment has raised some serious eyebrows. Thankfully, I’ve noticed a real shift lately as companies are starting to support corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives focused on sustainability. In 2024, it feels like the tide is really turning as businesses are rethinking how they operate to align with global sustainability goals and support local communities. Environmental degradation affects ecosystems, air quality, water resources, and biodiversity. Its impacts are not felt equally by all segments of society. As the environmental justice movement grows, rights-based approaches to use of natural resources and the environment are making their way into legal reforms.  A series of legal and institutional measures have arisen to increase access to remedy and justice in environmental matters, enhance levels of accountability within decision-making processes, and empower local traditional communities through recognition of historic claims and customary norms on the use of natural resources and the environment. Can AI, Carbon Capture, and Renewables join forces to power a low-carbon future? Ibrahim Ismail Elnafat provides an interesting perspective on the issue. He writes... Climate Change is a pressing global issue, driven by increasing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2), resulting from human activities. This demands urgent action without fundamentally altering how we generate and utilize energy, and safeguarding the environment. The world population is predicted to reach about 9.9 billion by 2050, (IISD, 2020), with over 80% increase in energy demand (IEA, 2020). Countries worldwide are increasingly adopting alternate energy sources, transitioning to Renewable Energy such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal power, by storing or repurposing captured carbon, to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
