  • Opportunity of a lifetime must be seized in the lifetime of the opportunity. Here is the basis of our Climate Literacy Mandate. We look at the Climate Change problem from the lens of enormous opportunities it presents then bridging the Climate Literacy gap among citizens of our Nation to seize opportunities like this. • Of the over 8 billion people on the planet, over 2.8 billion people are unable to afford a healthy diet since healthy diets are considered balanced in energy intake, diverse and adequate in all nutrients. Yet over 733 million persons are facing hunger in the world due to inequality and repeated weather shocks resulting from Climate Change. Not to mention the far reaching effects of food waste itself on Climate Change. Climate Change disproportionately affects our rural poor citizens, their productivity and their resulting agriculture yields. Yet one-third of the world's food is produced by small-farmholders. On this #WorldFoodDay, we join in amplifying our voice for the right to universal access to safe and nutritious food across our communities, our State and our Nation. #SDG2target1 #ReduceFoodWaste #WorldFoodDay2024 #LeaveNoOneBehind #OurClimateLiteracyStory

  • The ultraviolet radiation of the sun is harmful to different living things on Earth but the Ozone Layer is that shield or blanket that protects from these harmful rays from the sun. While responsible consumption and production #SDG12 is a call to phase out the consumption and production of different ozone depleting substances, shielding carbon sinks like the vegetations and the ocean and ensuring our biodiversity is duly protected. As we observe #WorldOzoneDay2024, we challenge our institutions to reinforce their commitments to #SDG12TARGET6 that encourages companies to adopt sustainable practices and sustainability reporting ultimately to preserve the Ozone Layer. • In September 1994, a heavy and prolonged rainfall caused the Ngadda River to overflow, leading to a breach of the dam. This breach resulted in a massive flood that affected some area of Maiduguri and other parts of Borno State, leaving approximately 400,000 families displaced, economic loss of crops, livestock, and infrastructures suffered severe damages. More recently, on September 10, 2024, following weeks of heavy rains, the Alau dam collapsed once again. This particular one led to the worst flooding Maiduguri has seen in three decades as over 70% of the residents in Borno state were displaced. Maiduguri town has been significantly affected as over 414,000 persons has been displaced and about 38 deaths in just 4days after the incident. The floodwaters submerged communities and infrastructure. The Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo lost animals, and residents faced severe health-related risks. The State General Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital were also impacted. Already Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps were relocated again for safety. Not to mention the jailbreak that occurred due to a collapsed wall at the correctional center in Maiduguri. Without doubts, excessive rainfall and dam collapse highlight the impact of already climate changes on extreme weather events and the need for urgent measures needed to address climate emergencies. These climate disasters underscore the importance of our climate communications in bridging the climate literacy gap between the Nation's citizenry in asking the right questioned, building sustainable solution blueprints to solve these problems and the governments responsible for our climate policies for proactive disaster management, infrastructure maintenance and reinforcements for climate resilience and our Nations preparedness in the face of imminent climate emergencies like this one. #SDG1target5 #SDG6target2 #SDG9target1 #SDG11target5 #SDG11target6 #SDG13target1 #LeaveNoOneBehind #OurClimateLiteracyStory

  • Our thoughts and prayers are with the Governors and the good people of all affected States by the most recent flooding incident across various States in Nigeria. More specifically, we commend the Governor of Borno State, His Excellency Governor Babagana Zulum. We also salute the former Governor of the State and our Nation's current Vice President, His Excellency Kashim Shettima for his remarkable show of empathy and exemplary leadership in demonstrating to the good people of Borno State that we are all in this together. It is worthy to state that the resulting devastating flooding incident is a repeat of a similar occurrence in 1994. It is our very believe that these flooding incidents are avoidable and responsible personnels and institutions should be probed and questioned as there were enough warnings from both Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) since the beginning of the year to mitigate this climate disaster. We therefore call on our leaders at the central, sub-nationals and local government levels to probe critically to avert a repeat of this kind of climate emergencies and the attendant humanitarian and medical support it calls for in the face of an already strained economy. #SDG1target5 #SDG6target2 #SDG9target1 #SDG11target5 #SDG11target6 #SDG13target1 #LeaveNoOneBehind #OurClimateLiteracyStory

  • Who are "early adopters"? The IFRS sustainability disclosure standards reporting roadmap by the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN) has considered "early adopters" as those Companies that have passed the IFRS sustainability disclosure readiness test assessment done by the FRCN. We are excited that these Companies are leading from the front, we are also convinced that this is a challenge to other players across the industries to see sustainability not as a nice add-on, but as an essential part of doing their businesses. As these amazons have raised the bar high by preparing their sustainability reports prior to 2024 which qualify them to be adjudged "early adopters" confirming that profit making in business does not have to be at the expense of people and the planet.
