Last week Saturday the members of the Education Law Society met for their September Meeting and the interactive session focused on the recent 18 years age limit policy for entering tertiary institutions. Attendees talked about various possible effects of the policy including; 📌Youth Truancy 📌Corruption 📌Reduced employment prospects It was pointed out that the government hadn't produced a framework for engaging the secondary school leavers during this period of waiting to guard against truancy. To combat this phenomenon, it was recommended that the government set up and fund free skill, hard, soft and digital, acquisition centres for the school leavers. The Education Law Society thus calls on the Federal Minister of Education, Mr Tahir Mamman San to cancel the policy or instead produce an effective, smart and workable plan for engaging the school leavers and dealing with other issues that may arise. Recently, the Education Law Society had its August Society Meeting with an interactive session on Jamb 2024 results crisis. In addition to commonly identified reasons such as poor quality of education, social media addiction etc, members identified the lack of adequate preparation of their students for JAMB by most schools due to their failure to incorporate the JAMB curriculum into their teaching as another potential reason for the mass failure in the 2024 JAMB. To resolve this issue therefore, members recommended incorporating the JAMB curriculum into NERDC curriculum, establishing a ranking system for secondary schools with jamb results as one criteria with an effective monitoring agency and strong sanctions as possible governmental initiatives. The need for collective leadership by all persons was also recommended. In all, we recommend 📌 More robust curriculum 📌 Mandating focus on jamb preparation in secondary schools 📌 A Ranking system with an effective monitoring agency 📌 Collective Leadership The meeting ended with a quiz competition on education law with Miss AROWOLO Kehinde Abosede emerging as the winner.
