Earlier this week, ElectHER, represented by our CEO, Ibijoke Faborode, spoke at the International Legislative Dialogue on Women and Constitutional Amendments in Nigeria, hosted by Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, CON, Deputy Speaker and Chairman of the House Committee on Constitution Review in collaboration with Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC).   The panel explored progressive pathways forward for Women's Political Inclusion in Nigeria, by promoting the adoption of temporary special measures, such as the Special Seats Bill for women.   Ibijoke underscored the importance of public sensitization to deepen understanding of the bill’s provisions and benefits; as well as engaging, and seeking buy-in of private sector players given their economic lens.   #ElectHER #InclusiveGovernace #ElectHERWPP #ElectHERWEE #ElectHERWPS

On July 25, 2024 the Nigeria Independent Candidacy Bill was officially listed in the National Assembly Journal (No. 56). Notable progress has since been made reflecting the 10th Assembly’s commitment to Inclusivity and Open Legislature as a core mandate. On Thursday September 26, 2024, the Bill was presented on the floor of the people’s House, scaling the First Reading. As a legacy bill that was introduced in previous Assemblies, on October 17, 2024, the Independent Candidacy Bill took double steps forward with its recommittal and referral to the House Constitution Review Committee for extensive review, including relevant stakeholder consultations. We are delighted by this progression and look forward to continuous collaboration with the Bill Sponsor, Rep. Akintunde Rotimi Jr. in the coming months, ensuring all strategic and technical stakeholders, colleagues, as well as the general public are an integral part of the process. Need more information about the bill/ its provisions, and benefits, common misconceptions and how you can support? Following an extensive analysis of historical voter trends in Edo State, findings indicate almost a 10% decline in voter turnout from 39.1% in 2012 to 22.4% in 2024 reinforcing the reality of growing voter apathy and disenfranchisement. The two major political parties- APC and PDP continue to dominate the landscape, securing the highest seat in the state over the past three election cycles, with little or no room for a third force. This trend raises significant concerns around the future of democracy, as a fewer number of citizens engage in the electoral process, potentially distorting electoral outcomes and diminishing the representation of electorates’ voices over time. How do we improve outcomes in elections within the shrinking landscape? #ElectHER #ElectHERWPP #EdoDecides2024 #EUSDGN

We are super proud to announce the deployment of our election-tech platform ‘Hernalytics’ for the recently concluded Edo Off-Cycle Election in Nigeria. Backed by the through the European Union Support to Democratic Governance Project in Nigeria project, we deployed over 50 accredited observers who used our cutting-edge Verified Election Observers- VEO Portal, to collect real-time data from all 18 LGAs in Edo State on Election Day. Data such as Time of Arrival of INEC Officials, Accreditation and Voting Time, Violence Records, Gender Distribution of Officials, Election Organization…etc were obtained from the platform. Through the Insights Dashboard on VEO Portal, we are turning data into actionable insights by aggregating and disaggregating key electoral data in real-time, represented through powerful visualizations. The importance of technology and data in safeguarding elections cannot be overstated—our pilot deployment in Edo has shown the impact of digital tools in ensuring credible and inclusive elections. We are gearing up for the next phase of Hernalytics Deployment, with over 100 observers ready to deploy across all LGAs in the upcoming Ondo elections. #DataDrivenAdvocacy #TechInElections #Hernalytics #ElectHER

Ahead of the highly anticipated Edo State governorship election holding tomorrow, September 21, 2024, we released a Pre-Assessment Analysis. The analysis reveals the critical role women and the youth play as voters, with women representing 47.89% of the electorate at 1,259,964, and the youth demography (ages 18-35) dominating registration with 983,133 voters, making up 37.40% of the total 2,629,025 voters for the 2024 Edo Off-Cycle Election. The analysis also delved into the campaign manifestos of the top three candidates from PDP, APC and Labour Party, as well as the sole female candidate, assessing their policy priorities and considerations for gender inclusivity. A sentiment analysis was carried out on INEC’s preparedness, and the key candidates, by analyzing online discussions reaching an estimated total of 16 million people, across various social media channels. The analysis highlights five key recommendations for INEC, including strengthening logistics and infrastructure especially across hard-to-reach area; improvement in security arrangement with particular attention to hotspots and immediate response systems in cases of violence/disruption; expansion of voter education especially in rural and underrepresented areas in languages they understand, clearly outlining procedures for voting and stressing peaceful conduct; extensive mock testing of accreditations in various locations to ensure election technology is deployed successfully; and the development of rigorous cybersecurity measures that will protect electoral data and systems from cyber-attacks. Today we mourn the great loss of one of own, our dearest Simi Olusola who passed away last week. Simi mirrored the ‘future of Nigeria’ in every sense of it- Astute, bold, intelligent, passionate about service, impact-driven, exemplary and resilient. From participating in the inaugural class of ElectHER Future Lawmakers Programme in 2021 (our accelerator programme for aspiring legislators), to contesting for state assembly elections in 2023 becoming one of the 8 female candidates officially supported by ElectHER, to recently attending the post-election retreat hosted for women who ran in the 2023 elections… Simi has been a huge part of ElectHER’s journey. Simi stood out through her excellence and accountability, actively campaigned and ran a good race while being heavily pregnant. Despite loosing her election, post 2023 election, She conducted a full audit of her campaign finance to every single naira received and expended. Beyond this all, Simi was a mother, wife, daughter, sister, community builder and friend to many. Reinforcing the fact that women can have, and do it all. Dear Simi, thank you for your service to humanity and inspiring us all. Nigeria, Africa and the world at large have lost a gem. We will miss you dearly and keep your loved ones in our thoughts.
